Hello all,

This is my first post. I live in India. I just watched this Hindi movie called My Name Is Khan, where the lead character Shah Rukh Khan, plays a person with Asperger's Syndrome. Do you think he portrayed AS well? please respond...

I have been waiting to see that movie, but it has not been to the theatre in my town in the States, as yet.

Welcome!

I've never seen the movie, But I heard about it while listening to the BBC World Service before going to bed (it is aired of Minnesota Public Radio during the late-night hours) last night. Sounds like a great movie!

Asperger's is just a name for a difference that falls in the autism spectrum. If we still want to use the name "Asperger's" we can. All that is happening is that we are moved into the label ASD. It's not like that just because the name is eliminated in the manual that we with AS are no longer autistic. And---it's not 2012 yet.

For those that think the change in the manual will cause the world to no longer acknowledge the name "Asperger's" is fooled. It will still be used. And the large amounts of books sold with "Asperger's" written on it won't be burned.

As for me, I have checked the proposed new criteria in the proposed DSM-V. I meet the criteria for ASD clinical diagnosis. In fact, when I was diagnosed with AS, the clinic informed me that I could just as well be considered HFA. But I got the AS label due to their interpretation of having speech on time. But my speech showed deficits which can be considered a speech delay. It is a matter of interpretation. That is where the new DSM may be more accurate---I don't know. I was fine with the way things were, but it doesn't bother me to be included in the ASD umbrella with what we now call LFA.

I do realize the potential for some current AS individuals to not be considered for support that they may currently get due to changes in meeting the criteria. But that doesn't take away the fact that autism is present.

Hi sammy26,

I'm from India too. I have seen the trailers on TV, and Shahrukh Khan acts like a mentally challanged person and not at all like an aspie. The first two trailers put me off so much that I don't want to see that movie ever. Those who don't believe me can check out the trailers on youtube and decide themselves... :fuming:

I heard two years ago that Karan Johar (director) and Shahrukh Khan are going to make a movie on Aspergers and I was so thrilled that finally there'll be a movie that will spread Autism awareness in India. It is spreading misinformation instead of awareness.

Maybe he has a more severe Asperger's. Anywho I'll check out the trailers. In the short preview I saw he looked more higher functioning than me.

It was generally a good portrayal of Aspergers.SRK did a lot of research into AS himself before the movie was filmed.
The cinematography is not Hollywood and the Indian music in it is very high energy-bring some ear plugs if you are sensitive to loud music.I liked the music and al in all its a nice feel good movie. :D

My Name Is Khan shows a character who is very autistic. Most aspies are not like that. Furthermore, it shows a muslim who is not against non-muslim ideologically, most muslims are not like that. The African-american part and the floods of 2005 that it shows is an unnecessary part.

It was exaggerated. He seemed more HFA than AS.
