I need a video editor that's compatible with windows xp, and that can add effects to the clip. JAHplayer failed to run on my machine. The only open source programs on osalt.com that meet my requirements are for linux.

So... install VirtualBox, then maybe Ubuntu, and whatever you found that does the job you want it to do.

Wikipedia has some quite good comparison tables for software packages, but I see that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... g_software does not show much beyond Avidemux (excellent clip cutter and transcoder), Blender (3D modelling animator) and VirtualDub (clipping and encoding).

I have seen reports that LiVES and PiTiVi have been compiled on Windows, but I don't see a download. They would be the two I would recommend for multiple tracks and effects.

Yup, that's the problem with Windows. If you want to run something on it, you have to pay for it. My video editing program came with the operating system, as did my programming environment, my games are all free, my graphics editor is free, and my database is free. I like Unix.

Thanks. The computer in question probably isn't going to do video editing on a virtual machine too well. I'll check out the wikipedia page.

It just hit me in the face, a dual boot would work fine for this.

Definitely, and your Windows partition and data will be visible in the Linux if you want to see it. There happens to be a reasonably good article in the current (printed) issue of Ubuntu User "Video Editors: Linux multimedia expert Dave Phillips rounds up some of Ubuntu’s best video editors", it is not on the website http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Magazine/Archive/2010/4

It describes an application PhotoFilmStrip http://www.photofilmstrip.org/home.html that I have never heard of, but I have frequently struggled to make "animated" movies out of still images in the past using image morphing, Virtual Dub filters etc., and I look forward to trying this.

The packages will work with most Linux distributions, not just Ubuntu. The LiveCD will let you try out a Linux distribution and test all your hardware without actually installing or altering your current system.
