an oldie, for sure, but surely a goodie, as well-

O Mio Babbino Caro Italian Lyrics-

O mio babbino caro,
mi piace, è bello bello,
vo’andare in Porta Rossa
a comperar l’anello!
Si, si, ci voglio andare!
E se l’amassi indarno,
andrei sul Ponte Vecchio
ma per buttarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento,
O Dio! Vorrei morir!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!

O Mio Babbino Caro English Translation-

Oh my dear father,
I like him, he is very handsome.
I want to go to Porta Rossa
to buy the ring!
Yes, yes, I want to go there!
And if my love were in vain,
I would go to Ponte Vecchio
and throw myself in the Arno!
I am pining and I am tormented,
Oh God! I would want to die!
Daddy, have mercy, have mercy!
Daddy, have mercy, have mercy!

"The Madison Time" by Ray Bryant Combo

I realize this is an old post----and it seems the poster hasn't been here, for quite awhile----but I wanted to make a comment about it, anyway.....

Baltimore is credited with the invention of the dance, that goes-along with this song----and, I've always loved it, because of that!! (We didn't actually invent it, though----they did it in Ohio, first [Columbus, maybe?]----it's just that it was seen on a local [Baltimore] dance show, and then picked-up on national dance shows. The dance is showed in the movie "Hairspray", which originated as a Broadway musical, written by Baltimore native, John Waters.)

I just wanted to add that bit of trivia.....

As for obscure oldies.....

"Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton (yes, the same one, that Elvis sang).

...Actually , IIRC , I first heard " Madison Time " in its use in the soundtrack album to the original , non- musical , version of Hairspray , the first film , which I believe Waters did write - After which he let be taken and rewritten into a musical , leading to the later film versions of the musical .
I don't think Waters directly re-wrote it to make the Broadway version , though he approved of it .

You are correct, John Waters didn't write the song----but, I was talking-about the DANCE (and, before you say it, John Waters didn't have anything to do with the creation of the dance, either).
