...Actually , IIRC , I first heard " Madison Time " in its use in the soundtrack album to the original , non- musical , version of Hairspray , the first film , which I believe Waters did write - After which he let be taken and rewritten into a musical , leading to the later film versions of the musical .
I don't think Waters directly re-wrote it to make the Broadway version , though he approved of it .
--and it seems the poster hasn't been here, for quite awhile----but I wanted to make a comment about it, anyway.....
Baltimore is credited with the invention of the dance, that goes-along with this song----and, I've always loved it, because of that!! (We didn't actually invent it, though----they did it in Ohio, first [Columbus, maybe?]----it's just that it was seen on a local [Baltimore] dance show, and then picked-up on national dance shows. The dance is showed in the movie "Hairspray", which originated as a Broadway musical, written by Baltimore native, John Waters.)
