My interests have nearly always revolved around certain movies or TV shows:

Early childhood:
Beetlejuice (the cartoon version)
Dinosaurs (the TV show)
Balto

Age 8 - 10:
Pokemon
Digimon

Age 11 - 13:
Rurouni Kenshin
Inuyasha

Age 14 - 15:
Naruto
One Piece

Age 16 - 18:
Hellsing
Trinity Blood

Present:
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Sweeney Todd
Edward Scissorhands
Repo! The Genetic Opera
Simon Says (the movie starring Crispin Glover)
Amadeus
Wilde

Presently I've set my own personal record for number of things obsessed over at one time. Although, my focus does shift around a lot - some days I'm much more into certain movies than others.

I've never had a specific obsession that I've kept for any length of time. I've loved cats, ferrets, books, and music for a long time but I consider those pretty "normal" and general. I will research something to death, though, and I am super detail-oriented. I will organize the CRAP out of whatever you give me, and if I don't know how to do it properly, I will research that to death.

If I'm not interested in something, I'm sort of screwed. I can't make myself get interested usually, and then I don't pay much attention to completing whatever task. This unfortunately happens at work often, and can be an issue.

My interests are pretty obscure right now and not many people share them with me. Exept for the evolution and religion obsession I have, that one has plenty of other fans too.
I have never found anyone in real life that shares my interest in all thing ape related, but on facebook I recently came across loads of chimp fanatics that had "liked" facebook pages of various sanctuaries and conservation charities and stuff, and 2 people have added me. I'm like YESSS my obsessions aren't that obscure afterall.

Same. My special interest has been one band since 1994, with a few years in there when I wasn't paying as close attention to them.

But I have never had the kind of detailed interests described in this thread. Yes I know a lot about this one band, but I don't make it a point to know every possible detail about them (though I kind of do know most details about them anyway... :) ) To be honest it makes me feel kind of jealous that so many people here can devote such intense interest to getting to know a particular topic. I think I'm too distracted, not focused enough to be able to do that.

I feel the same way. I'll say I have a special interest in something (music) but I don't know everything, and it makes me feel almost like I'm not interested enough. But I have other things to do, other things to obsess over. Currently I am doing a TON of research on ferret and cat foods because I need to change mine, but I don't have the time or patience to look at every single one. And I feel bad because of that.

I've had a lot of obsessions in the way of bands, movies and TV shows over the years, and when I'm obsessed with something I can memorise everything about it whether trivia about a band or memorising every single line in a movie. I can easily appear as though I've been into something for years and years even if I've only known of it for about a week. I quickly get bored of things though and move onto something else and used to feel afterwards like I'd lost my whole identity when the obsession ceased. I just don't have a head for facts and figures and memorising stuff these days though, as my problems with depression seriously impacts on my memory.

These days I think my main special interest is running my music website, which I devote more or less all my free time to. And it allows me to obsess a little over a particular album or sub-genre for a while and then move onto something else while keeping the focus on something bigger.

I am obsessed with toys. I have encyclopaedic knowledge of types, brands etc. I'm also obsessed with some nursery products, such as prams, safety gates etc. It would be easy to think I was broody, but I really am far more interested in the products than babies. E.g. I pushed my friend's baby in his stroller while she walked with her other toddler and this made my day. But I didn't really interact with the baby.

The bits of these interests that fascinate me most are... 1) Different types of the same thing - camparisons between different design and brands. 2) Bright colours. 3) Parts and mechanics. 4) Tactile nature of baby toys.

I think I agree with your description. What is 'special' is my approach - whatever I'm interested in becomes special. The level of intensity and obsessive drive for information and understanding is what is unusual and often considered odd by others, not necessarily the topics.

I don't really relate to 'trainspotter' thinking, because I would find it dull to be only interested in one thing, and see that almost as a need to catalogue information. But I can relate to it as part of my way of thinking.

For example, when I first had a garden I wanted to plant some winter bulbs. I didn't just go and buy some daffs and plant them, I made a spreadsheet about all the different types of garden bulbs, when they flowered, how tall they grew, what soil they needed etc etc. I wanted all the information I could get, so that I actually knew what I was doing, so I read extensively.
Then I went and bought some bulbs and planted them. :)
And then I drew a garden plan, so that I knew where they were. And so on.

I put a great deal of intensity into everything I do, but usually have a number of interests going on simultaneously, some of which are short-lived, and others which I have had all my life, such as music, science. Subjects wax and wane, but my approach stays the same. There are many things which I am completely oblivious to because I couldn't care less about them.

If I am asked what my hobbies are, I can't usually think of anything, since I don't think of the things I do as hobbies, they are an integral part of my life. If I am asked what I am interested in, I will say that I am interested in many things, and have the potential to be interested in anything that catches my attention - and something always does.

I don't have any mechanical or engineering aptitude at all, so probably the stereotypical obsession with door-knobs or deep-fat fryers* would never cross my mind - I am knowledge-oriented more than object-oriented, although I've always had little collections of things which others find strange and 'ungirly', and definitely know what the compulsion to have 'one of every type of something' feels like, and how hard it is to resist, even after I've lost interest in the something. I like objects for themselves, and get attached to them, I don't necessarily want to know any information about them.

( * If I were interested in buying a deep-fat fryer, I would research until I had sufficient information to make an informed choice - I do that kind of thing all the time, I want to pick the best thing for me - spontaneity can be tricky. )

This has always been my approach too (except I have never collected anything but books). I find it strange that everyone doesn't do things this way. I do however have times (could be weeks, months or years) where I am completely focused on one or two "specialist subjects" and learning as much as I can about them. The first one of these I remember was bees, followed by Victorian culture (triggered by the Anne of Green Gables series). For many years (since I became pregnant with my sons) my interest has been parenting, early childhood development and of course ASD. This is a very functional and socially acceptable interest for a mother to have, and I think very common, it was just the intensity that made it unusual (for about 5 years I read nothing but non-fiction books related to children and how to parent them, had binders of notes etc, and could think and talk of little else). I have also been completely obsessed with Harry Potter since 2003. It is funny that the obsession with parenting makes people think I am some kind of wonderful person and very intelligent, whereas the one with Harry Potter makes people think I am silly and infantile...meanwhile I am the exact same person.

Other adulthood passions of mine have been Tolkien, cooking and baking, and art journaling and mixed media art. Again it is amusing to me that people wholeheartedly support and appreciate the cooking interest which is typical and socially acceptable, admire the art interest and|or think it is a bit suspect and a waste of time, and look horrified when I start talking Tolkien.

I think the problem is that to a psychiatrist, women are viewed as a little obsessive to begin with and they consider it natural. For instance, a woman's obsession with music, a boy band, a certain nationality of cooking or eating, a certain object (i.e.: collecting hoards and hoards of collector porcelains or Barbies), are all considered 'normal' for a woman and are not identified as an obsessive behavior. Yes, it's sexist. No, it isn't true. But I've seen this happen and I've noticed the pattern.

As to the girl obsessed with Linguistics--- so am I! The problem with my obsession is that they're not necessarily 'narrow'? I am obsessed with certain periods in history, certain myths and the historical perspective thereof, Linguistics/Language, and certain areas of Philosophy. When you sum it all up, I could have as much as five or six simultaneous obsessive interests at a given period, and I am obsessive about them--- I block almost everything else out and surround myself with mountains of books and articles about that topic. I am never obsessive over objects, only subjects.

I'll follow IdahoRose's format. All of these interests are ones in which I completely and unhealthily indulged in.

Childhood
Dictionary
cursive/handwriting
Looney Tunes
Garfield
Martha Stewart/homemaking
Baby-sitter's Club books
X-Men
Beavis and Butthead
Sports Illustrated for Kids (went through tomboy phase)
Magic Nursery babies (I bought 15)
Puppy Surprise (obviously, I just liked the element of surprise)
Disney movies (Cinderella then Aladdin then Beauty & the Beast)
HTML

Adolescence
HTML
Sailor Moon
Archie comics
Clueless
Boybands (thought they were all the same at first)
Sims
Make-up
Thesaurus

Early Adulthood
Sex & the City
Martha Stewart
Thesaurus
Classic rock/Beatles
cursive (perfected)
Art Therapy
Autism
Classic Literature
Itunes
Sylvia Plath

Present
Criterion Collection
birds
the auteurs.com
polyvore
thrift stores/antiques
Martha Stewart
philosophy
dictionary
etymology

I tend to revisit my special interests. Except the lame ones.

It's difficult to adhere to a list because I often switch around, some are more lasting than others. My memory serves me too well, as new ones keep coming to mind. The thought of accurately writing each one down frustrates me. I couldn't even list the movies that I've watched on repeat since childhood...

My obession is art....always have been and will be. Sometimes I devate to psychology but always come back. However in my field...the more I obess, better artist I become...and I then am rewarded with praise over my work...so people dont think I am odd, just talented, plus it is expected that artists are odd, so I have my cover-up there too.

I have done painting, photography, mixed-media, collage, drawing, fiber sculpture, needle felting, spinning fiber on a wheel, yarn/rope coiled basketry, traditional basketry, gourd art, paper mache', pottery, knitting, writing poetry(Poetry is a constant lifelong passion), broom making, hemp jewelry making, and the project to beat all prior art projects is that I am learning sustainable building cause I want to build my own house, so I can live in something that I created. I am also learning organic farming so I can create a homestead for myself.

Meerkats were my special intrest YEARS before this sudden Meerkat Manor or Compare the Meerkat s**t began. I was always being made fun of for it and considered weird by people but ever since Meerkat Manor got so popular, it's okay to be obsessed with meerkats. I'm in the US so most people here aren't familair with Compare the Meerkat but if I lived in the UK, I'd probably commit sucide by now because of idots coming up and telling me "Simples!" But even before meerkats, my special intrests were always animal related.

Childhood : -I was very obsessed with animals. I made filing cards with the latin names, growth, etc... from every animal that I possessed, I nursed a lot of small and sick animals,
brought strange insects and reptiles back from vacation and put dead animals in jars with formaldehyde.
- Every week I went religiously to the local library , I was always reading.
- I could sculpt for hours with plasticine.
-At 12 I was into athletics, I did a lot of long distance running in competions with other schools.
- Archeology I found also very interesting and I was always the one who found very old coins, bones, roman glass and pottery fragments. A pity there was no internet at
the time so I could satisfy my need for knowledge.

Adulthood : I'm still reading a lot, mainly fantasy books. I don' t have animals anymore, except one praying mantis I brought back from vacation for the children.
I 'm an avid collector of vintage furniture, books, toys .
My latest obsession is probably age related. Now at 48 I read everything about anti aging and I do everything to look as young as possible, to have wrinkle free skin,
prevent grey hair. I experiment with bio identical hormones, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and nutrition

I´ve got several interests that change every once in a while. At the moment for instance I am keen on Computers.
But one hobby has never changed. I´ve always loved drawing. The process of creating a picture just makes me happy. When I am drawing I tend to forget about the rest of the world. Which is an awsome feeling.

I too have a variety of special interests/obsessions, but I now maintain them under control. Here's a list of my current interests that are still with me since I was young:

BANDS - Take That, Queen, KISS, and The Strokes.
MUSICALS - Cats, We Will Rock You, Wicked, and The Phantom of The Opera.
VIDEO GAMES - Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive, Marvel vs Capcom, DC Universe vs MK, and Mortal Kombat
COMIC BOOKS - Wonder Woman and Catwoman. I'm currently fantasizing about my own fictional character who's Catwoman's male equivalent: The Catman.
TV: Nick Cannon Presents 'Wild N Out', Whose Line Is It Anyway?, My Life As Liz, and If You Really Knew Me.

Past interests:

CARTOONS - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sailor Moon, and Saint Seiya.
TV - You Can't Do That on Television, Salute Your Shorts, Double Dare, Welcome Freshmen, Power Rangers, Singled Out and Top of The Pops.
BANDS - The Spice Girls and The Backstreet Boys.
BOOKS - The Magic School Bus, Heckedy Peg, and Dr. Suess books.
MOVIES - The Little Mermaid and the Wayne's World movies.
When I was little, I couldn't stop talking about my interests until my classmates got annoyed and left me isolated. A lesson well learned.

When I was younger I used to obsess over things A LOT more than now. Like crazily so. I actually wrote all of the characters' names from "Willow" on my school pencil box. Hahaha! I think there was a lot more I didn't know 15-20 years ago than I know as a 31 year old.

I still get obsessed with things, for sure, but for much shorter periods of time. When I AM obsessed though, I spend my time researching those things until I feel like I've learned everything I need to know. Then I move on.

Anyway, my interests have always been considered odd and sometimes creepy. Some top ones from childhood: serial killers, The X-Files, anything paranormal, mental disorders, medical conditions, The Holocaust, slavery, The Titanic and so on. I always get interested in disaster-type topics.
