After flunking out Structural engineer in, it took over five years to get over it

And now I have a profound and pervasive fear of failure

And many times I am pretty lazy

Lazy lazy lazy

But hey whatever

Part of the reason why I wanted to do Structural engineering was because (@the time I thought that it) matched my then undiagnosed autism spectrum symptoms

Another part was humanities and social sciences majors often end up unemployed or working at Starbucks as baristas

But hey

I am too stupid to get a job that matches my autism symptoms

And too socially awkward to work at customer service

And (it does not appear to be) much alternative

And sooner or later I might have to prostitute, panhandle, or recycling cans

And sooner or later might end up homeless

And to think my precious lil "parents" made me start studying for the SAT in third grade and take it in seventh grade

And a "partridge in a pear tree"

Now I fear failure and social rejection

:skull:

A job description for SolidWorks instructor did not list any requirements that I did not fulfill

It did not require a civil or mechanical engineering degree. Which I do not have and feel profoundly ashamed of flunking out of.

And I applied and nobody answered.

SolidWorks:. Computer aided drafting software

And I took two classes in Cosmos and SolidWorks in UCSD.

And I was bad at it and did not like it. But it matched my autism symptoms.

And not many jobs match my autism symptoms

I wanted to be a special education teacher, and, later, a psychologist.

It took me a few years to realize how awfully suited I'd be for either, both in terms of soft skills and in general interest. I've always been interested in the 'what and why' of the aberrant human brain, but I've never been interested in the 'how' of fixing it.

______________

When I was 12 I worked at a k-2 special education class for one summer. Volunteer

Five days a week. Four hours a day. Six weeks

Besides being able to claim the work experience on resumes, that job had little positive effect

Teacher and teacher aides had the nerve to keep telling me off

It was not worth the cost benefit analysis.

And I did not go back.

Even when I was 30 and a friend leer pressured me into volunteering at a day care, I was extremely reluctant.

And that was just once a month for four hours. Ten month

Unless someone uses extortion or bribery,,, I ain't going near no special education class ever again

First ambition was to be a plumber.

Age around seven I discover electricity.

Then electronics, and recording sounds.

That set my steps towards my work, an electronics engineer with a specilaism in broadcasting - i have repaired most things at each end of the chain - studios, cameras, sound mixers, OB trucks, and at the other end, my first pocket money jobs were repairing next door's black ans white TV where the picture had shrunk to letter box proportions new 390 ohm resistor, (this time Wire Wound not cheap carbon) in the cathode of the field output valve (tube for US and Canada readers), then in my thirties and forties, electrical installation leading to a side business, qualifying as an electrical inspector and becoming the go to person in my main job on electrical safety queries.

Did I mention tellies were a special interest in my teenage years ?

When I was 5 I wanted to be a dress designer & ballerina. When I was 9 I wanted to be a scientist. When I was 12 I hit puberty & that was the beginning of the end of my occupational aspirations. Now that I am 41 I want to draw pictures.

When I was in first grade I wanted to be an Oceanographer because I loved killer whales, but then in second grade I learned that it's actually Marine Biologists that studied all the sea-going mammals I loved so much, so I wanted to be that instead.

I kept the animal theme going - went to school for pre-vet (didn't go to vet school, though) and now work with farm animals.
