Shopping for multitouch netbooks
Hi all, I'm off to university next year and looking to find a netbook.
I've run Ubuntu at home for several years now and can't stand windows, so I'll be replacing windows with that. Although, when I was considering what edition of Ubuntu to go with, I ran across their netbook edition. Now I want a flashy netbook that has a touchscreen to take advantage of the unity interface.
With this in mind, I now have the problem of picking which netbook I want. And of course, it has to run on linux with as few hardware problems as possible. That, and my budget is $700
After consulting Google, I've come across the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t:
# Intel Atom N470 @ 1.83GHz, 667MHz FSB; 512KB Cache
# 2GB of DDR2 RAM (667MHz)
# 10.1" LCD (1024x600); LED backlight, glossy
# Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics
# 250GB (5400RPM) Seagate Momentus 5400.6 Hard Drive
# 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
# No Optical Drive
# 1.3 megapixel webcam
# VGA output
# USB 2.0 x 2
# Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
# RJ-45 (Ethernet 10/100/1000)
# Headphone / Mic Input Jacks
# SD / MMC / SDHC Multimedia Card Reader
# Stereo Speakers
# 3.3 Pounds (with 4-cell battery installed)
# Removable 4-Cell Li-ion Battery
# 11.1" x 8.0" x 1.4" (Dimensions)
Only problem I see is the wifi is a Broadcom driver. Previous experience with them has been quite frustrating due to driver problems (only just managed to avoid using ndiswrapper with Lucid). But I think that they've GPL'd their drivers now so it should work out of the box.
I'm after something that will last for a while in terms of hardware requirements (nothing fancy, but enough for note taking and web browsing without wanting to pull out your hair), which is pulling me away from the cheaper alternatives.
Is the pricetag worth it? Or would I be better off with something a bit cheaper? Also, will it work under Ubuntu?
