Why did Moses create an invisible God - the Clay Potter who lives in the sky above the country of Israel?

Unseen but heard topic

Actually this is an interesting question--much ink has been used in theories and explanations throughout the ages. it was a stroke of Jewish genius to make their god invisible and yet so overwhelmingly powerful, frightening and wise. It was an idea that had roots in Egyptian lore as well.

If you google Moses and monotheism you will find sites and links that will help you find answers to this age old question. Good luck.

Since Islam also forbids any images of living things it might be related somehow to the superstition that photographs steal a bit of the soul.

According to the Bible it was Abraham who first met the invisible god.

How did he know he'd met him if he was invisible? :P

I saw a God upon the stair
A Hebrew God who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
Oh God I wish he'd go away!

Abe and Mo topic

You are correct, but it was Mo who institutionalized the religion with the unseen god and the ten commandments. Very dramatic and legal, to give it added weight. 8)

Yes, but did "Mo" see God before or after he took the tablets?

In point of fact, the God of Abraham and Moses wasn't supposed to be invisible - you just weren't allowed to look at Him. (It is specified in the Bible that when Moses was on Mt. Sinai receiving the Commandments, he was ordered to close his eyes as God passed, but was allowed to view the Sacred Backside. That's right, it's right there in the Bible - God mooned Moses!)

It's part of a semi-serious thesis I've propounded before: God doesn't like people looking at Him. He doesn't really talk to people any more, but when He did, He was frequently misunderstood. And everything in His universe, from the smallest particle to the greatest galaxy, spins.

It's obvious - God is autistic!

At the time of Moses, cameras weren't invented.

Graven images are three d. made of stone, wood or metal all of which existed during the time of Moses.

As I understand it a little, Abraham saw a visible Burning Bush.

Apparently God was invisible to Abraham.

Then, Moses climbed up to the top of a mountain, Mt. Sinai, where the invisible God dropped by to give Moses some stone tablets containing 10 commandments.

Apparently God was invisible to Moses but the stone tablets were quite visible to Moses.

Rather, why do people consider invisibility to be equivalent to nonexistence? Air is invisible, yet it exists. Most forms of light are invisible to us with our human eyes, with the exception of about 300 nanometers to 700 nanometers. Atoms are invisible to us, since they are smaller than the wavelengths of light our eyes have the ability to perceive.
