Don't feel bad - I would have thought it ought to be Washington except for the reports of his death.
I figured the original poster had just missed the news of Reagan's death, given it didn't seem likely he thought Washington was still alive.

But is he truly delusional? A lot of the so-called analysis of this statement merely adds up the popular vote in the 1980 election, but it completely fails to look at the damage done to the Democratic vote by both the Kennedy campaign and by the presence of Anderson in the campaign.
Kennedy was not a third party candidate, and the fact that he was able to mount a substantive primary challenge to a sitting president just illustrates how weak a president Carter was.
The Anderson campaign likely did more damage to Reagan than to Carter, as Anderson's emphasis on fixing the economic problems Carter presided over drew attention away from Reagan's plans to do the same.
Carter is right about Israel and Afghanistan, though, and he did do a good job at Camp David.
