I also have people wave their hands in front of my face to get my attention when I am absorbed in my own thoughts. And when I realize it and look at them, they tend to laugh (especially if they are with someone). I think it's rude and not at all appropriate. I rarely smile. So people often assume I am cold or angry. I also supposedly have the "disconnected, detached" look, at least that is what has been said about me.
The waving hand thing is just damn rude--if someone did that to me I would snap at them and ask if they had a problem.
