To each government its own set of rules.

But, even though I'm a determinist, I do believe that sometimes the death penalty can be a good thing for both society and the serial criminal. Society feels more secure with one messed up person out of the way and the psycho no longer has to suffer the emotional and psychological struggles of his dreadful life.

I do think a lifer should get an option(beyond hanging himself with bedsheets) to end his own life.

Death makes mistakes permanent. So I voted never.

Contrary to the intuition of the uninformed, putting a person to death costs more than a lifetime prison sentence, but the cost difference is not so high as to make the cost of punishment the main issue.

Personally, I am not for the death penalty, and would rarely advocate it.

Giving a serial murderer a quick and easy escape is too lenient. A life-long punishment would be more sufficient.

Moreover, death is a point of no return. Even most reasonable humans are capable of error, but not capable of resurrection.

Let's hope they stop bailing them out of jail then.

I am against it, but I don't think we should be going soft on em. They should bring back the chain gangs.

I agree with that, but I'd describe myself as extremely soft on crime.

To the OP, it should never be conducted in my opinion. I think very long prison terms - anything more than a few years - are in most cases completely pointless, too.

So it'd be ok with you if they let serial killers (who never learn from their mistakes) continue to roam the streets freely?

No. I think most serial killers should be incarcerated indefinitely.

I still wouldn't describe myself as hard on serial killers, though, because for people who have to be incarcerated indefinitely, I'd make their time as pleasant as possible.

There is simply too much evidence of the failure of the courts and the bar to get it right. Even a 99% accuracy rate would be insufficient protection for the 1% who would wind up being wrongfully convicted.

The imposition of capital punishment on a person later exonerated should give us all significant pause. At least those who have been wrongfully imprisoned can be released, and provided with the means to rebuild what is left of their lives. No such remediation is possible for the wrongfully executed.

I agree. I don't think the death penalty should be conducted because death isn't a punishment.
