First thing I'd do to improve on the current deity is exist.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. had the nads to suggest that God made a mistake.

God tried to convey the message to humans that they should treat each other more nicely.

God had his son pose as a common tradesman from the slums of Galilee ( just another slob on the bus).
When the humans ganged up on his son and crucified him God announced that "that was my son you just crucified- hes dying for your sins."

Vonnegut suggested that the human race got the wrong message from this tactic.

Instead of getting the message that humans should treat each other well they got the message that "its bad to mess with people who are well connected", and thats why they just went back to mistreating each other.

Vonnegut suggested that God should have allowed a guy who really was just another slob on the bus to be crusified- and then announced that "I am now ADPOTING this guy as my adopted son- so dont misstreat anyone anymore."

Something to that effect. I forget which novel that was from.
