Hi.

Hey look, I'm a hummingbird. I love hummingbirds. During breeding season I watch live hummer cams to see them laying eggs, the wee ones hatching, mama feeding them, and finally them learning to flap their wings and fly off.

Did you know a hummer's nest is only the size of half a walnut?

Hummingbirds look pretty but I haven't ever seen one in person.

Then the only one you'd be able to see is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the only one east of the Mississippi. (There are several more species in the West.)

Those are the only kinds I see here in WV. I used to have a couple of hummingbird feeders. But I didn't really have good places to put them and the sun would ruin the nectar and I got tired of having to add new nectar every day, so I gave up.

I'll give you some tips if you want to try again. First do a bit of research as to which species are in your area and also WHEN they are in your area. If possible put the feeder near some colorful flowers. If that's not possible, place some colorful things near your feeder, they love red.

Be patient and leave the feeder up for a few weeks, it might take them a while to find you. Once they do, they'll remember. I still had hummers coming to look for my feeders for a few years after I stopped putting them out.

A word about nectar - it's absolutely crucial to use only plain white table sugar for your nectar. Do NOT use honey, powdered sugar or any other kind of sugar besides plain white. Also do NOT add food coloring to it; it's poison to them (as is honey, etc.) Change the liquid every 1-3 days (you can make a big batch and keep it in the fridge). If the nectar gets cloudy, change it immediately, it's gone bad. Direct sunlight can make the nectar go bad fast.
