On June 25th and 26th there will be the Annual Twin Cities (Minneapolis, MN) LGBT festival and parade, There's expected to be tens of thousands of people attending the event with live music, art shows, games, contests, etc. All free. I'm expecting to be going alone on both days, possibly attending from when it opens and closes.

The reason I'm making this thread is that I've never been to any LGBT event before, I've actually only had met a handful of gays in my life. This is the first event like this I've been to alone. I'm wondering about what I'm gonna specifically expect? I'm aware I'll probably engage in conversation with a bunch of older horny men, but anything else?

I'm 19, twinkish, and gay. Anyone older who have experience with events like this?

I went to my first pride parade back in September with several people. You should probably expect a bit of sensory overload, as there's going to be tons of people there. One factor that will probably be unique to my experience is that, because the parade I went to was in Dallas, it was pretty hot, and all the parade attendees were getting sweaty, and top that with the fact that so many of those attendees were smoking and drinking and you can imagine how much it smelled. :x

But, yeah, if you're not good around crowds, then consider yourself forewarned when I tell you that it's going to get pretty crowded.

I don't really mind large crowds, I'm just kind of awkward when strangers come out of nowhere trying to get to know me.

Yes. The opposite of bear. A derogatory term for slim, often hairless, gay-boys.

Boston Pride just ended and it seems like everyone is getting younger and younger. You will fit in being 19!!

If you drink or do drugs, try to be smart about it. No dark alleys alone.

Be safe. Practice safe sex. No means no. Smile. Have a great time. Practice safe sex-again. Greet your fellow queers with the obligatory "Happy Pride" and smile some more.

Pride-- for me-- has been the one time when our queer community comes together. Yes there is lots of cruising and general mayhem - but underneath it people are just happy to be together in safe space amongst their peers.

Even the most awkward aspie amongst us can always find a good group of folks to "casually" hang with.

I'm assuming practicing 'safe sex' is likely, if I'm relatively social on that day? :U

Good for you!
It might be a good idea for you to go with a friend you trust. If you're anything like me it may be a good idea to have someone to turn to who you know and trust.

Otherwise have fun! Pride is usually a great time! One thing you can expect is to see a variety of people from all walks of life. The queer community is diverse, contrary to what we see and hear in the media. There will be crowds, big crowds. And probably loud music. And lots of rainbows. The best part is just seeing all the people, and knowing they're almost all LGBT, or at least straights who enjoy being with us. It can be very affirming and empowering. I hope you enjoy it!

Let me know how it works for you, i wish i could go to a gay pride festival myself. Ive been gay all my life and i need all the help i can get getting the confidence to come out ouf the closet, and walk proudly. I wanna be proud of my homosexuality and nothing would make me more proud than seeing the confidence of others just like me. and who knows maybe id even meet the one for me at the festival :)

I had fun with two other people holding a banner for
a pro-LGBT faith based organization
in today's Portland Pride parade.

We three led the way for many pro-LGBT churches
and other worship communities who are part of this organization.

It was awesome!
{Though I forgot to tell the gay minister, who I did meet before
on several occasions I am bisexual.}

I do have plans to attend another
Pride festival that's close to Portland on July 9th.

I went to another LGBT festival yesterday.

It was awesome.

Weather was perfect and I had a good time.

I plan on going to another one scheduled
for August 6th. Not sure if I should get
AMTRAK or GREYHOUND tickets, as the festival
is one hour south of Portland.

I've been to a couple of these and hated all of them.

It's just way too "woo hoo!" for me. People are really touchy-feely and theatrical and loud and dancey and noisy and ugh.
