A computer AI aboard the ship, actually. Disconnent him and he's done. Your in control of the ship. You couldn't do shut down the
Event Horizon the same way.
On top of that, the Event Horizon wasn't sentient because of it's computer system like HAL, but because after it had gone to Hell, it was implied that something had gained possession of the ship. Essentially
becoming the Even Horizon.
