Quote:
Clomipramine has also been used experimentally to treat dogs with severe anxiety disorders (separation anxiety, etc.), OCD, or cognitive dysfunction syndrome.[citation needed]

It may take two to three weeks before the full effects of this medication are noticed in most indications and two months or more in OCD.

Along with SSRIs, clomipramine is a frequently prescribed drug for the treatment of OCD. As is typical with the older tricyclic antidepressants (the tertiary amines), it has more side effects than SSRIs, so some authorities regard it as a second-line treatment to be used if treatment with SSRIs fails. However, disregarding side effects, it may be slightly more effective in combating the symptoms of OCD. It is not commonly used for treating depression, and usually another tricyclic (or drug from a different class) would be used. Clomipramine and the SSRIs (specifically paroxetine) have also been used to treat premature ejaculation.

Switching to an SSRI, done correctly, would likely be comparatively beneficial.

When discussing medication, a Psychologist or Psychotherapist will be better than a Psychiatrist (whom focuses more on pharmacological treatment), but all are better than a GP.

Fluoxetine (Prozac) is more for panic disorder than general anxiety or OCD. By comparison, Fluvoxamine CR (Luvox) if available, may help better with OCD and Anxiety Disorder, but you have to limit or avoid alcohol, caffeine and tobacco. Also consider Zoloft and the compound Picamilon.

Herbal extracts of Brahmi, Valerian and St John's Wort are worth considering if you want a non-pharmacological alternative. They need several months to take effect, you will need to limit alcohol and consult a doctor if taking with other medications. They are very easy to come off compared to Pharmacy medicine.

Keep in mind that Psychotherapeutic treatment is more effective than medication, especially long term.

Why did you have to open this thread? now those tards wana put me on it too. They said it makes you feel bad first two weeks, that you will be during this period less clam and more suicidal. f**k that. and then I am supposed to feel "much better". Sure. if the side effects don't kill me first I might end up like one of those clinical death cases. And then, I am supposed to feel better.

I hate doctors.

I took Prozac last year while I was already on medication to produce hormones because mine are...broken. Or something. Anyways, it made me have hypomanic episodes and more anxiety attacks than I was having before I began taking it. That didn't end well.

I've actually found that my sex drive has gone up on Citalopram (another SSRI) this time round. It makes it harder to climax, but that's never been that important to me (I can understand why others would hate it).

THE problem with SSRIs, I've found, is stomach upsets.

When I took Prozac it made me hypomanic, and nauseous. Went off it after a week because I was talking nonstop and deliberately annoying others.

Personally, ADHD meds are better than SSRI's. However, an upside to SSRI's is that they last an entire day, as opposed to six to eight hours (which is usually how long stimulants work for me).

I was on it for about 3 and a half weeks and then I decided I did not want any more 'mental breakdown' pills and threw them in the garbage. Yeah I am not exactly sure what was going on the day I quit but my emotions where ridiculously out of control I think I was feeling some emotions I have never felt, I was paranoid and litterally thought everyone was whispering about me and of course extremly anxious and depressed.

It probably works for some people but I would be careful and watch out for if its making you feel worse...I mean after that experiance I understand why anti-depressants make some people more suicidal.

side effects are not guaranteed to happen..it depends on the person. Best thing you can do is try it and if you do not like the side effects of it then you stop taking it.

You'll have to take it for a whole month before deciding though... its normal for most side effects to pop up in the first 2 weeks and then your body adapts and compensates for it. I remember the first 3 weeks I was given my blood pressure medication I could barely concentrate since I was dizzy and sleepy most of the time. By the end of the month I was back to normal.

That would have been preferrable to the psychological effects.

I was on it and it did absolutely NOTHING for me. I experienced very vivid dreams and nightmares, jitteriness and one personal side effect that is more appropriate for the women's dicussion.

Is it just me or does the word Prozac remind you of Frozen Yogurt?

Anyways, Prozac is another name for Fluoxetine, yes?

If so, yes, I do take Prozac.

I've been on it for 9 months, the first month or so was horrible with side-effects but after that it 'calmed down' and did much more good than harm. :) I guess you could try it, then if you don't like it, ween off it?

Okay I've been on this stuff a week now and I am starting to get the REALLY BAD psychological side-effects... I've been having anxiety attacks (and generalised anxiety) for a few days now, feeling really depressed and suicidal at times and also I seem to have lost my future plans. I was hoping to move out of my care home in two months time. When I was on the Citalopram I was all ready to go. Fine. Now that I am on fluoxetine I feel like there is no future :(

Thankfully as I said in my earlier post, this is only intended to wean me off SSRIs for good rather than to take over from the Citalopram. Hopefully once it's gone I will be back to normal again.
