Can you? I can. It is the weirdest thing. I can heard the sound a tv makes when it is left on a blank screen.

It's not just you. I can hear TV's even when the screen isn't on. Also, I can hear conversations spoken at normal level from hundreds of feet away.

It's definitely not just you.

My AS partner was complaining the other night about how much he hates the high-pitched sound the t.v makes.

I told him I didn't know what he was talking about and he seemed genuinely shocked that I couldn't hear something "so obvious". He turned the television off and on again and I could hear it briefly as the set started-up, but once the other sounds were there to distract me, I couldn't notice it at all.

I asked him if he could still hear it even with the sound of the t.v show running and he said yes!

Admittedly, there have been times when I have envied some of his amazing aspie traits... like his incredible intelligence (which leaves me feeling like a bit of a drooling idiot at times!), but being able to watch my t.v program in peace, blissfully unaware of the noise which drives him so insane is definitely a trait I'm glad to have!

And one time when I was at school and I walked into a room and I could hear that the class room TV was on so and went and turned it off and my teacher was like, "How did you know it was on?"

I hear it too. It's most obvious with CRT TVs, but some LCDs/plasmas make an electronic whine too. My parents used to leave them on blank screens and only I seemed to notice.

I can hear those TVs but whatever is on TV that has the volume on blocks out the annoying sound. Same as video games. Sometimes I can still hear it but not all TVs are the same so not all high pitch sounds are the same volume. Some are louder than others. I just can't stand it on mute. Either have sound on or turn it off. The high pitch sound seems lower with sound on. I can even tell in stores if there is a TV on without seeing one. The moment I walked into Walgreens, I knew they had a TV on and it was right above my head.

I know lot of NTs can hear this too but lot of them can't either. It's half and half. I thought everyone could hear them and I never made a fuss about it in my childhood. I just assumed they could hear it and didn't mind the sound. One of my brothers heard it too as a child because I remember him walking in his bedroom to turn off his TV that was on a blank screen because he heard it.

I also remember another time I was at my parents lake house in Montana and I was about 19 then or 20. I kept hearing this annoying sound and no one could hear it. It was from outside and I think it was some bug making that sound. I was either in the right spot to hear it but I was further away from the sound and they were closer and couldn't hear it. Either that or they had it tuned out because they didn't know what they were supposed to hear. I could even hear crickets outside when I be in my parents house and they had their windows open. No one could hear them but me. I made a comment about it and no one knew what I was talking about. They said they don't hear any.

Yes, I hear lots of things that others don't. A radio show played the sound of an alarm which people over 20 apparently are unable to hear. It's purpose is to make teenagers disperse from near shops. I could hear it clearly and I was over 35. Also, I used to hear a weird humming noise when I was in bed and I think it came from a factory, about a mile away. No-one else could hear it.

The older style of tv's used to drive me crazy as well. However, most of the time it was only when it was a blank screen. We did have one tv though that started emitting a really high pitched sound even when it was playing a tv show. However, no one else in the family could hear it so it just led to me getting hearing checks (again). They thought I was nutters until a few years later it started to really make a high pitched whine right before it died.

I hear the TV, something rubbing up against another thing, the noise my keys make while I'm typing ticks me off.

Yes. I can hear sirens that are miles away.

I could hear when the belt was going to pop off one of the machines we used a lot. Everyone in awhile they would pull me off a job to sit there and listen to the machine when it was running funny. In between parts I would have to listen for the popping or clicking sounds the belt makes when it is ready to slip off damaging the machine. The machine was super loud but I could still hear the pops and clicks. The boss knew I hated vibrations so he would apalogize for making me sit there but I kept the machine limping along until we got it fixed by a professional. When the machine would run funny they would yell go get RainDan or sometimes the machine whisperer.

Not so much anymore. Hearing capacity declines with age. I remember being able to hear really high pitched sounds that no one else could.
