Hi,

I'm really new here and was hoping that there are a few other parents of older lower functioning kids out there that might have some ideas on how to deal with puberty issues. If this has been discussed before could someone please point me in the right direction?

My son is almost 12 and is starting to show signs of turning into a teen, both physically and emotionally. All the advice I seem to come across for people on the spectrum seems to be targeted at higher functioning individuals. My son is only partially verbal, he only communicates immediate needs or wants. We're lucky if he tells us he's hurt himself. He seems to understand simple concepts, but more complex ones it's hard to tell what he understands.

If anyone knows of resouces or has any ideas for helping him to understand what's happening to him I would really like to hear about them.

I don't know how relevant it is for you but there is a lot of information and book recommendations on the National Autistic Webesite here:

If you are in the UK, they also have a conference coming up for parents to learn about sex education, puberty and relationships:
