Dear Face of Boo, Your meal looks so good! Is that Hummus with melted butter in the red bowl in the top picture? Is that a big pile of brownies in the second picture?

Dear Tequila, your holiday meal looks good...I like couscous...Sylkat

That either looks like brownies or black pudding and it can't be the latter, so what is it? ;)

Skylkat: yes it is hummus, but it's with olive oil, never with melted butter lol (otherwise it should be called heart-attackus and not hummus lol)

As for the 'brownies' : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibbeh

It has been ages since I posted anything on here. I took photos of last night's meal, I'm back to working on my food web site, haven't worked on it for months, real life has been in the way.

Olive oil and garlic fried rice, with dried parsley, turmeric, crushed coriander seeds, black pepper and other spices, with walnut pieces and raisins added at the end of cooking.

Olive oil stir fried spicy Tofurkey sausage with potato, celery, fresh Italian parsley and lots of spices, including dried chilies.

I would prefer to have coconut oil for frying, it handles high heat much better, need to go buy some!

I'm off to bake some spicy marinaded tofu!

What does tofurkey actually taste like?

It tastes like a spicy sausage.

It has a rich flavour from a variety of spices, chopped chilies, and oils. The fake meat aspect is from soy, but doesn't have a texture like tofu. There's no comparison between Yves brand tofu dogs, which taste horribly bland, and Tofurkey sausages, which have very strong flavours.

A meat eater tried some of what I prepared, and their response was:

"If I wasn't expecting it [to be vegan], I probably wouldn't have noticed [it was not real meat]".

I don't personally feel the need for "fake meat", but I like eating a variety of textures and flavours, so I often experiment with making various vegan products smell, look and taste more similar to meat by preparing them to be more like meat (e.g. slightly charred and crumbly outside, softer but chewy middle, strong flavours), with great success.

I find preparing varied vegan dishes that include ones similar in texture or flavour to favourite meat dishes, helps to eliminate cravings for meat. It doesn't need to be identical, just similar. Things like bulgar wheat or even potatoes can be used to simulate textures of meat dishes, and using fresh, rich spices can make it taste similar.

@Tequila:

The first photo looks like ham, eggs and mashed potatoes... but what is that in the second picture, on what looks like a potato? Tuna mix?

Tonight I made some tofu with caulliflower and broccoli, with a sauce. The sauce has a bit of soya milk, water, minced garlic, sesame paste (tahini), tamari (soya sauce), ground black pepper, dried chillies, chili powder, turmeric, dried parsley, and some finely chopped Asian thing I don't know the name of that looked like big chives.

It tasted quite good, with some white rice.

Was in a hurry, so the photo isn't ideal (no colour correction to fix it being a bit dark, and it's in widescreen format).

It's gammon. Thick piece of bacon, essentially.

Tuna mayonnaise with jacket potato and salad.

Why don't you like coriander? Also, have you tried coriander from freshly ground seeds, as opposed to powder in a bottle?

I happen to be one of these rare people who will vomit if they even taste a single tiny-miny leaf of cori in their meal. Don't ask why, I don't know the answer either.
