I'm thinking of getting one of these for myself as my present Apple iMac is constantly breaking down and freezing and is continually in for repair. This is unacceptable. Should I look for a netbook so that I still have Internet connection when my iMac is in for repair?

Whatever happens, I sure as hell am not buying another iMac!

I use a netbook (Eee PC) for travel. Good enough to run all I need, but it's an older one with the smaller screen.

Only thing I say about cheap laptops or netbooks is check them out in person before buying. Most of them are cheap for a "good" (sic) reason.

I'm surprised your Mac has had so many problems.

IMHO, you should get as good of a computer as possible. That way, either it lasts for a long time, or when it comes time to resell, you can recoup as much as possible.

As a lightweight, portable substitute with good battery life, they can be very good. My daughter has a Samsung N210 that gives 9 hours per charge, plays fullscreen video and runs all the applications she needs (in Ubuntu, which is more responsive than the supplied Windows 7).
