honestly? spirited away.

i was not very impressed when i saw the box art, "some girl in a maid costume...yeah ok."
also we got the cd from the public library, god knows how many filthy hands and old cd players it's passed through, the beginning skipped and froze a little so that put me off.
...

it may have been the person i was watching it with but at the end, when i sat there frozen and i was asked "did you like it"....."you didn't huh?", the reason i did not answer was because i was in a state of astounded stupor, it was that good. would probably still be in my top three even if it were not for the incredibly heavy nostalgia factor.

Warm Bodies because I though it would suck so much that when I watched it, it wasn't that bad.
Leon: The Professional because I thought it was going to be completely different and it surprised me in the same you are surprised when you think you are about to drink water, but then it turns out to be milk.

Silent Hill. I wasn't expecting much and didn't see it in theaters, waiting instead for the DVD. But I was stunned by how much money and effort went into that film (the first one) on every level, from the acting to the special effects. Unlike most game movies, it felt like it was made by people who not only played video games, but played that specific video game and enjoyed it. The script wasn't perfect, but the movie's heart was in the right place. It really did feel and sound like the games, too. Solid thumbs-up from me.

Case 39 was another surprise. Unoriginal horror-thriller starring Renee Zellweger and Jodelle Ferland (Alessa/Sharon from Silent Hill), sat on the shelf for years, something about a demonic child, bla bla bla. But when a certain movie critic I respect gave it a good review, I tried it out and liked it a lot. Once again, some extra effort and dedication from the people involved made the difference between a train wreck and a decent film.

Watch a clip of it for yourself, where Ferland brilliantly straddles the line between someone who's clearly a child and something that clearly isn't, and tell me you don't want to give this film a look. 8O

^ I'd like to second "Silent Hill". Breaks the rule about movies based on video games.

Also:
"Shaun of the Dead" - Thought it would suck, now it's one of my favorite movies.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" - Only saw it to get out of the house with my son for a while. Ended up loving it.
"Mr. Peabody and Sherman" - Another one for the kids that turned out to be quite touching and entertaining.

Just finished watching "Muppets Most Wanted", and man was I pleasantly surprised. Granted it was slow in some places but it was a fun Muppet film that had me laughing throughout and the musical numbers were great. A few really had that nostalgic feel like I was watching those classic Muppet movies from the early years again.

This is coming from someone who did not like the 2011 ("The Muppets") movie. I didn't like it because that movie wasn't really about the Muppets at all and they were more of a plot device/secondary characters if anything. Plus it was far too serious and sappy for its own good.

Muppets Most Wanted had the right mixture of classic Muppets with modern stuff thrown in and it had the Muppets at the center of the story whereas the 2011 film felt like watching Jason Segal's Mary Sue fanfiction onscreen.

Vampire in Brooklyn is a criminally underrated movie, I don't know why it was so panned by critics. It's funny but also has some really creepy parts.
