I am here because my boyfriend and I are raising his eight yr old son who has Autism but with no support from the Mother in regards to encouraging or seeking out new ways to teach Bryce. Im so tired of everyone thinking because he is autistic that he is never going to amount to anything! I have helped proved them wrong but i am not the mom! I have helped change this child's life but we do it on our time only which is a week with us and a week with her. I need good advice about autistic children. I want to hear from dedicated parents or caregivers who are trying to assist their child to be the best he or she can be. Please help!! !! :?

Is it autism or AS? If it's the latter, here is what is considered the best book on the market:

Good luck!

He is autistic. he has mild cp and was born at 28 weeks. Has a seizure disorder which is controlled well with meds. Thank you for the book idea. i showed his Dad and he was greatful for the shared info. We are having a hard time because his Mom doesnt believe in Autism but said it is really a word they use to call a child retarded or brain damaged. Bryce does have noticeable issues, for sure but he can use an ipod and a computer and is learning to read and write and is verbal more so now than ever. im trying so hard to help this child have all of his opportunities but we just dont know ANY parents with autistic children and yes, we have searched our area. I love that angel and I want to be my best for him. i feel like im overwhelmed with info but no solid info from parents who are walking this walk too!

Welcome!

What issues, in particular, would you say are most prominent right now? It is difficult to answer an open ended question like "how do we help him?" so we kind of need a place to start.

How is his pragmatic language?
Is he having severe sensory issues or meltdowns?
Does he have self-calming habits or odd repetitive movements and how do the people around him treat those?
Does he have issues with fine or gross motor control that are causing him issues?
What are his interests?

Welcome to WP! With a little help from our diligent moderator (thanks Cornflake!), your thread has landed in a good spot! There is a stickie at the top of this board with recommended reading lists and another stickie titled Kids w/ Classic Autism, PDD-NOS & Speech Delays which may be more applicable to your situation ? not clear from your OP where your kiddo is on the spectrum. There are lots of dedicated parents and caregivers on this forum some of whom are NT and some of whom are on the spectrum. We are also thankful to have many folks with AS who don't have kids but who provide us with invaluable insight into being Aspie or Autistic.
