Ok, this is only my second actual post since coming aboard, but since we have already been discussing this, I want to get opinions about what I just got told..

So I introduced the Asperger's/Autism thing to my Pain doc ( was there for my regular visit, but I also have an issue with my left hand CD arthritis related). He said getting a dx, my best bet was to see an endocrinologist about it.

Is this correct? Or just one section of current medical thinking?
And should I get a referal to one or ask about other?

Sincerely,
Matthew

there are metabolite based tests that are or will be the most reliable method of diagnosis but i'm not aware that they are being used yet. there may be older ones i'm not aware of

That is kind of what I suspected. I haven't seen much research on this topic here, but he said they definitely think autism is related to metabolism, etc. some how..

Sincerely,
Matthew

An endocrinologist for diagnosing Asperger's?

Are you sure that you doctor did not think that you meant Aspergillus the fungus?

Hmm, Your joking right?
Yes, he knew what I meant. Don't know if I should follow that or go another route, though..

Sincerely,
Matthew

I am not joking, actually. The idea of seeing an endocrinologist about Asperger's is bizarre to me, given the lack of knowledge that an endocrinologist would have about any form of autism and the lack of biological tests for autism.

I think your doc was confused about what you said. If you want a dx than go to a psychologist thats how i got my dx.

DON'T GO. the metabolism thing is a thing which the anti vax conspiracy theorists push. it is quack medicine and it will be a waste of money and possibly harmful.

I just want to add my experience.

I've been to three neurolgists and they have always tried to find a medical problem to explain me. I always have blood tests done that I nor the techs even heard of. It's usually stuff to do with acids and proteins.

Occasionally they do find things that are off or that shouldn't be there but still no explanation.

Metabolic acidosis is the medical condition and some say it's quite common with people on the spectrum.

Speaking as an Australian, so this may differ elsewhere, but a psychologist is probably the best bet for to get an initial feeling for the situation. Here psychologists cannot prescribe drugs so they don't have the incentive to push a drug on you. They should also be able to help with getting a referral to someone that specialises in autism. Much better than going to see a doctor for blood tests?

Well, I've known him for a long time, so I didn't peg him for the anti-vax type. But anything is possible, I suppose.
I guess I'll have to try the yellow pages or get a referal from a local GP. I'd try my Family Doctor, but I owe that office money ( I need to repay that, but I don't make the money I used to at my former job). Plus, she is more likely to be opinionated on this than my Rheumy/Pain doc. I could try at a local clinic, I guess. See if I can find someone to do an evaluation..
Thanks for the advice..

Sincerely,
Matthew

I put Asperger's + endocrinologist into Google. Nothing.

I'd pretty much concluded that was a dead-end. Will talk to a GP soonest for psych referal. This is Plan B.

I think its more neurological/autoimmunity (possible) than psychological. But a psychologist seems best place to start, for now.

Matthew
