Try FreeBSD.org some day. Or read about it.

Really nice if you like straightforwardness and stable environment.

Windows 7 is my 'daily driver'.

The file server and one VPS is on CentOS, one VPS is on Debian.
If Battlefield 3 ran acceptably within WINE, I'd likely switch right now.

Yeah freebsd is something I would take seriously as an alternative, the only thing I found with linux and freebsd is that my machine struggled playing wow, but on windows it runs smooth.

I think linux has a long way to get to a point where we can play native.

I wonder if I could play the mac version of wow on freebsd as they are quite similar.

FreeBSD does a pretty good job of Linux compatibility. I am running a 64bit build of FreeBSD, and I use adobe flash in a 32bit Linux compatibility layer with a native 64bit FreeBSD build of Firefox and adobe flash runs extremely well.

OS X is derived from BSD and its various flavours, as the kernel uses bits of FreeBSD, NetBSD and Mach 3 (which is also derived from BSD). You can't run OS X binaries on FreeBSD because OS X and FreeBSD utilise different binary formats, OS X utilises Mach-O and FreeBSD utilises ELF.

I think the Mac OS X incompatibilities stem from:
* Binary container format (as said above)
* Graphics API is different (Cairo? vs X11)

If someone want to give it a try may compile a "hello world" on OS X and try to interpretate the format on FreeBSD. I think the main obstacle is graphics API.

Cairo is cross-platform, is not tied down to a particular windowing system and is not developed by Apple, you're thinking of Quartz. XQuarts (which is the window server of Quartz on OS X), is based on X.Org Server.

XQuarts is based on X11?, but it needs to have the same basic structure in order to write an efficient translation scheme.

Mac OS 9, OS X Tiger, Leopard, or Lion (main) depending on the computer.

Have a look at these links HERE, HERE and HERE. All I was saying is that it's based on X11 or shall I say its an implementation of X11 that has been tweaked to Apple's liking. I can't comment on the XQuartz APIs because I don't know anything about them.

Windows.

I might try another one at one point, but I don't really feel the need to change the operating system now.
