I am a bit of a retro handheld freak, and one of my special interests is the original Game Boy/Game Boy Color. Anybody have any stories/experiences regarding these, or games recommendations? I have around 50 Game Boy games.

Hello! I grew up with the original Game Boy, (I have every single Nintendo system made and released in the USA...retro gamer here) I don't know if you ever played any of the original Pokemon series, but they are a classic (that makes me feel very old come to think of it :( )
There was also a Tamagotchi game I was fond of back in the day, don't know if virtual pets are your thing, but if they are, it's worth checking out.
Don't know if you have a 3DS, but Nintendo is slowly releasing really old retro games in the eshop for it, the original Metroid is on there, along with Super Mario World for the Game Boy, excellent games. Or you can probably find them on Ebay and play them like they were meant to be played, on the Game Boy :)
If I come across any more recommendations I'll post them

While I like to play old school games just as much as new ones, I'm not sure I really know about many Gameboy games you probably don't already have. Here's what I've played, though:

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
Super Mario Land
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
Pokemon Pinball
Zelda: Link's Awakening/DX
Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
Kirby's Dream Land
Rampage
Metal Gear Solid(alternatively titled Metal Gear: Ghost Babel)
Haven't tried it myself but Metroid 2: Return of Samus might be good

I definitely have more GBA games, but of course those are a bit different.

I wonder if "Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters" for the original Game Boy will be in the 3DS e-shop soon to promote the new Kid Icarus Uprising. I still own the cartridge though and played it on the Gamecube:Game Boy Player recently. The OP should have one of those since it's by far the best way to play GB/GBC/GBA games.

Ugh, I tried to play Megaman Battle Network 2 on my Gameboy player earlier and couldn't get it to work. Of course, that's really more a problem with the cartridge(and cartridges in general). :(

Do you have the Gamecube component video cables? The Game Boy Player runs all cartridges in 480p with the component cables.

By the way the later Gamecube models are inferior and don't even support component video. :?

If you get a second hand original gameboy, be careful. They get a lot of dust under the screen and as they have no back light, in natural conditions they are hard to see.

Nah, it's really nothing wrong with my Gamecube or cables or anything like that, since it seems everything else and other Gameboy games I have work. Just that this one game seems to be beyond cleaning and just doesn't want to work past the title screen.

I still play Gameboy, but have to roll the batteries and shake the whole thing until it works and goes on. I think it doesn't have much time left.

Oh, I difinetely remember the original Game Boy. Loved Castlevania Adventure, Donkey Kong Land, Operation C, Tennis, and many others. It was the handheld of my childhood. Good times!

My Game Boy is right here, perfectly functional after almost (really, almost) two decades.

It was my first experience with video games. My mom got me a blue Game Boy for Christmas (with English language games, were there many German releases back then anyway?) and I was captured. I'm not exactly sure what year that was... I had to have been either 6 or 7 years old, so 1994 (likely) or 1995.

I harboured no interested in TV back then because I had trouble understanding the audio and the images on screen were hard to take in (in case of shows for older children) or bored me (watching 5 minutes would have been a miracle).

However, being able to manipulate moving images by pushing buttons? Now that was amazing.

Consequentially, I spent a lot of time playing it. Not obsessively so my mom never had to restrict it. I enjoyed playing but I didn't have the attention span necessary to play more than half an hour to an hour perhaps.

For the longest time, my favourite game was Kirby's Dream Land 2. Hamsterpower!

I have two original Game Boys. One red (mine), one green (my dad's). It's funny, I got the red one for my birthday, along with Kirby's Dream Land and Yoshi's Cookie (both awesome games, by the way). My dad stole my GB to play it so much that for his birthday, he got the green one and Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (another great game). And then, guess what? He almost never played it, so it fell into my hands. And both of them still work with no troubles, and both screens are completely intact!

Games I have for GB and GBC (which I also own):
Kirby's Dream Land
Yoshi's Cookie
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Pokemon Red
Pokemon Blue
Pokemon Yellow
Pokemon Gold
Pokemon Silver
Pokemon Crystal
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Yeah, I love Pokemon. And I still play all those games, except Pokemon Silver because the battery in the cartridge died and it doesn't save any more :(
