I'm a retro gamer myself and I've always liked the Game Boy. Most of the games people have listed here already are already good ones and are worth playing through.
Others I recommend:
Final Fantasy Legend series and Final Fantasy Adventure
Rayman and Rayman 2
Bubble Bobble
Any of the Bomberman games
Bust-a-Move 4
Bust-a-Move Millennium
Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong GB
Donkey Kong Land series
Grand Theft Auto 2
Mario Tennis
Any of the Mega Man games
Bionic Commando
Any of the Castlevania games
Metroid II

I'm sure there are more good games, Game Boy and Game Boy Color had a bunch of good games.
