Please join us! And if you're on facebook, please "like" the Autism Reading Room on facebook!

ABC News Correspondent John Donvan will moderate a panel of top autism research scientists on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 5 p.m. in the Koshland Science Museum at the National Academy of Sciences. The forum marks the launch of MindSpec’s new science outreach website, the Autism Reading Room.

The first comprehensive online project to build bridges between scientific research on autism and the public, the Autism Reading Room features interactive tools to explain current scientific knowledge about autism spectrum disorders. It also offers a new phone app that tests autism knowledge, Autism Quiz, which is available free at the iTunes store.

In the spirit of bridging that gap between scientist-speak and the general public, we have assembled a panel of top scientists to discuss developments in autism research and their practical impact on the ground. We are bringing together scientists, clinicians, parent groups, and policy makers to create an evening of discussion among these largely segregated branches of the autism community. I am attaching a program with more details on the speakers.

ABC’s John Donvan, who is writing a book on the history of autism, is the moderator.

Marcia Knutson, A.R.N.P., from the office of U.S. Rep. James P. Moran, Jr. [D-Va.], will discuss the Autism Educators Act of 2012, which Rep. Moran introduced to Congress as legislation on April 27, 2012. This bill aims to establish a pilot program to train teachers who work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

To attend the forum or for more information, please contact: Catherine C. Swanwick, Ph.D., 202.531.4138; or Tracy Frish, 573.727.3867. The Koshland Museum is located at 525 E St., NW, Washington, DC, 20001.
