I don't think I've ever seen a single seat on a bus or train. Sounds like it would really cut down the amount of potential passengers though, so I don't think any of these companies would be in a rush to do that. More leg space on certain buses would be nice though. I'm only 6.1 and sometimes find my legs being crushed.

The only place I saw it was in metro Chicago Metra trains. They are double decker and the lower deck are 2 seaters, but the upper deck are one seaters. Reason being is there is an opening in the middle of the upper deck so the conductor can collect tickets from the upper deck without climbing the stairs.

Some of the older model buses here are inadvertently all one seaters. Presumably their testing group consisted entirely of supermodels. You can sit one average person on a seat and about half a buttock of another.

As long as I sit next to the window, I'm generally fine on public transport. The side of the carriage is sort of a safe spot to press into if the person next to me is a bit space invadery - usually completely unintentional, I'm sure.

every seat i have ever seen has been a "single seat".
no matter how congested and numerous they are, they are all designed for single bums.

There used to be about 3 or 4 single seats at the front of the bus, but trouble is, it was at the front, so old people got on and some of the bitchy ones would force you to get up to let them sit down, if you are young and stupid enough for them to pick on. I don't mind letting old people sit down, but I do not like being told to get up because it shows me up in front of everybody.

Overcrowded, two or three to a seat school bus in Little Rock,Ark,Hot,humid, you stuck to the seat and the person next to you,no breeze because the bus is stopping to let kids off, mean kids on the bus, mean bus driver,I wish I could have walked to school.
I would like to take a train trip, but I don't think I could sleep with a stranger sitting next to me.Someone told me a story of their train ride and they said the very large person seated next to them fell asleep snoring and slumped over on them, sort of pinning them down.Aaargh!! !! !! I would just loose it,I wish I could afford a private compartment.

In the US they have signs over those seats telling you to offer them to the elderly and disabled people. That is what they are there for. Anyone can sit in them if they aren't full but if they are and you are able bodied you are expected to sit elsewhere or stand.
