I defend the correct usage of the then/than duality! The heathens who fail to account for this must be slain! (And, ugh, I just came across a government site with such blatantly incorrect grammar... signs of illiteracy infiltrating these strongholds!)

...who's with me?! 8)

I believe that language rules can never be more then guidelines. Language evolves from usage. And usage has always proved impossible to control. It is a fascinating subject area however and a minor interest area of mine. But I am most interested in the history of individual words.

I also like creative use of language, so that would not put me in your camp I am sorry to say.

Creative use of language has its place, yes, but grammar is quickly becoming "a thing of the past" and it's so sad to see it go.

(Notice my correct usage of "its" and "it's"? Hehehe, I also know the correct usage of then/than, they're/there/their, and you're/your!)

Please don't kill me!! !

I won't correct grammar in informal settings such as this. You never know if it's a non-native English speaker or someone who didn't have a good education or who maybe has a problem like dyslexia or even some physical problem which causes him not to be able to type, so he's at the mercy of a voice recognition program. Some people like to play with sounds or try to reflect their actual speech patterns.

In formal settings, however, I'm ruthless.

My husband and I were talking about grammar tonight (he does not use proper grammar and is very poor at spelling) and he told me:

Quote:
Periods are for girls.

Your husband is a girl because there is a period at the end of that sentence. :P

LOL That would apply if he were texting me. (He actually uses a lot of periods... often like this .)

I've always just 'known' the differences, but after seeing one of OliveOilMom's posts correcting someone who did that, not long afterward I caught myself about to publish a post where I mistakenly added an "o" to the preposition, and I thought "oh no! my brain is starting to leak"

BTW Mootoo I'm glad to see you've found a mission.

Does axing a question, opening the refridgiator, waiting for the ambliance, eating with a spoom, and using the word 'goes' instead of 'said' fit into this very welcome discussion?

Most non-natives actually tend to get simple spelling as 'then/than' correctly... grammar, perhaps not, but then it's sort of obvious why they wouldn't have a certain grammar, as even British people's e.g. tend to be different from Americans'. Most people I know who have trouble with words sounding the same but spelt differently are almost invariably English-natives.
