My Mum (who is having a very, very hard time at the moment), took an overdose while I was in Nottingham. She overdosed on my olanzapine - an antipsychotic medication (thank God she did not drink alcohol with it) and was taken by ambulance to A&E straight away (while I was a couple of 100s of miles away) to hospital. I called the High Dependency Unit (she was moved there, as she was unconscious) literally every two hours throughout the day and night. I got barely any sleep. I don't know how I acted relatively OK during the workshop. She was unconscious for a day and a half, but when she woke up, oh my God... She was hallucinating, she was trying to run away, she was delirious, she couldn't speak... I heard her on the phone once and she was babbling, well, sh*t. She couldn't get her words out right; she was like a drunk, but ten times worse. She was trying to say things, she was trying to communicate, but she could not get her words out right. I felt sick when I heard her on the phone, because she was so ill and I felt awful, as if it was my fault (it was my Dad's fault in fact). I came back home by train the day before yesterday, and yesterday I spent the whole day in the ward with her, but luckily she was discharged that evening. Now she is at home, and she was referred to the psychological services, but she's still doing badly.

The main message is,

DO NOT OVERDOSE ON ANTIPSYCHOTICS.

The biology of this is:
Antipsychotics help ill people get better, but if given to healthy people, they do the complete reverse. Luckily the effects are only temporary.

BUT STILL,
PLEASE, FOR YOUR OWN SANTIY'S SAKE,
DO NOT OD ON ANTIPSYCHOTICS
THEY ARE AS BAD AS BAD ACID TRIPS

(Not that I know what acid trips are like, but I do know what psychosis is like, and mate, you don't want to go there)

One thing you might want to think about is if you have only HEARD about 'bad acid trips' and never experienced one, I would suggest you just drop it out of your expressions of how bad something ELSE was. No need to rile up those of us who have had both good and bad acid trips which are NOTHING like intentionally overdosing on anti psychotics.

That's nasty when people overdose due to stress/depression and whatever, i've felt like doing it before but haven't, I hope your mum gets through it ok.

She managed to go out shopping today, so she's doing well.

Sins Boldly, I know third-hand (a friend of mine has a friend who tried) what a bad acid trip is like. It was described vividly to me. Oh yeah, and the person now has some form of PTSD from it.

One of my online friends was given anti-psychotics to take her hallucinations away. It made 'em far worse. I was given anti-psychotics once, and they just made me even more depressed and wigged out than I normally am.

I was put on one after my suicide attempt, and it made me anxious like hell.

i did 'overdose' on zyprexa once sort-of by accident (though i was very depressed at the time)... i slept for 24 hours. and my mother didn't even notice!! ! i guess she was used to me being zonked out all the time when on that stuff

the pills never actually worked, they just made me more anxious. i only took them because i had one of those manipulative and dominant psychiatrists who didn't believe in AS and used medicine as a means of control, if i didn't take them i was threatened with hospital. evil bastard

I've never heard of anyone tripping on anti-psychotics before. And I have been on Haldol, Zyprexa and Risperdal until they found one that suited me.

Possible side-effects of Zyprexa: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, Tardive dyskinesia, low blood pressure, Seizures. Impaired judgment, thinking, and motor skills.

It's her own fault for stuffing her face with medications that don't belong to her. But you shouldn't say they are comparable to acid trips that sounds like bullshit to me. They remove psychotic symptoms, they do not induce them. Unless you can show where it is stated otherwise.

And I doubt that Zyprexa, a NEW type of antipsychotic could compare to the side-effects you get from Haldol. So I think your warning is a little exaggerated.

You did not see what happened. She was completely out of it - she was in another world completely. She was not coherent for 2 days. She was just... incomprehensible, and talking about wine bottles on "that shelf" and asked my Dad if he was a "marrow or a chicken".

A doctor told me that Zyprexa can do the reverse of what they're supposed to do if given in large doses to healthy people.

My Mum was hypersensitive to that class of medications I found out.

I still think what she did was stupid, but don't you go f*cking insulting my Mum OK?

I just felt exhausted on Zyprexa most of the time. When I first started on it, I couldn't walk without clinging onto the walls.

I stopped taking them at the beginning of this month anyway, because I was fed up of them. Pysch doesn't know, but she'll find out somehow one day. I don't care. What can she do? I'm fine.

I'm not insulting your mother I just think her mental state is the culprit and the drugs just made her go bonkers.. But OD on anything is a bad idea so yeah.

I had a similar experience, except at the time I was working on my university degree. I actually missed classes because I slept right through them. I told the quack psychiatrist that the side effects were too much for me to handle, so he let me go off it. I call him a quack because he cared more about the perks from the drug company reps than how his paitents were really doing, the appointment was only long enough for him to write a prescription. I made the big mistake of telling him that I have a family history of bipolar disorder, that's when he gave me that drug, when the only symptom I ever had was depression.

Speaking of Zyprexa, here's an article by an internist who was pressured to prescribe that drug by a rep, and he wasn't even a psychiatrist.
