Why is the max level on online games always a multiple of 5 or 10 and never something weird like 47?

Because prime numbers are uncool, even if 179 is the best number ever invented.

Because a long time ago we ended up with ten digits and everything looks nice with a 0 or 5 at the end. If we were all counting in binary they would all end in zeroes or ones.

Asheron's Call, when it released, had a maximum displayed level of 126 though you could continue to earn XP and get stronger, but you stopped earning more skill points at 126. There was an eventual XP cap as well but it was really damned high. The second expansion raised the actual maximum level to 275 and at that point it was also an XP cap once you reached it.
