Since it is developmental disorder i think, this is my personal opinion, that "I am autistic" is more appropriate. As for what others use to refer to me, i guess i don't have a preference.

I'm autistic....because it explains my difficulties. Why would I say I am just me, if I was just me then there shouldn't be others like me with the same issues.

It's the same with ocd, it defines a part of me. my personality is very much influenced by both. I refuse to say "I hate labels" I would be completely lost without something to define my struggles.

I usually just say that I am non-neurotypical, and explain further if asked. :nerdy:

How I refer to myself depends on my mood.

If I'm being deadpan, I refer to myself as Aspergian.
If I'm feeling bitter, I have been known to (sarcastically) use the line: "I'm an Asp. Be careful I don't bite you."
If I'm feeling quirky, I call myself a Changeling.

I refer to others generally as "Aut-Kin". As I see it, for better or worse, we're all in this together. Like a family, essentially.

I prefer "I am autistic". Autism is more intrinsic to me than, for example, my gender or my nationality--and nobody takes issue with the statements, "I am a woman," or, "I am an American." Neither being a female, nor American, nor autistic, should be a source of shame--it doesn't need to be separated from me. Saying "I have autism" is like saying that autism is detachable. It's not. "I have autism" in the same sense that "I have a brain"... but people don't think of it like that. They think of it in the same sense as "I have a cold." And that is not what I mean when I talk about autism.
