ADHD and Technology
I believe that technology has worsened my ADHD symptoms. For awhile, in my late teens, I had become better about learning to focus and channel my thoughts. Then, the technology boom hit; I mean in which cell phones and computers became commonplace. It was too easy to drop was I was doing and change to something else. So now, I don't feel like I have a handle on my mind anymore. It keeps going faster and faster. I can hardly watch an hour long drama on my laptop without pausing it and doing something else for 30 seconds.
I don't know how to overcome this. I don't like the solution of getting rid of my computer. That doesn't solve the problem, and I need things like email to communicate. The internet does a lot of good for me, too - this site being a perfect example.
How do I control myself with regards to the computer? The phone is no issue; I don't really like to text. The computer is my main problem. Has anyone successfully controlled their computer usage? I tried a daily time limit, but I started to get bored and that went out of the window. I used to be so amazing at entertaining myself but what has happened to me?
I want to overcome this challenge. I need my mind to slow down.
I have exactly the same problem. I'm replying to this right now when I should be cleaning my house for the last 2 hrs but have yet to start. I think our minds need constant stimulation and technology is the easiest way of getting it. My life was so much easier before the Internet was so accessible.
I had to banish my laptop to my husbands garage office (he's a mechanic with his own business). I was spending way too much time on it but in his office the temptation is taken away but I still have access to it if I need it. I also have to delete games off my iPhone on a regular basis if I start playing them too much. Not long age to my complete despair he bought an ipad
. To his annoyance (he can't understand why I just can't learn some self control) that also got banished to his office.
It may be hard but I think the best option is to get rid of the computer to take away the temptation as you may never be able to learn the self control needed to leave it alone. If you could put it somewhere that you can still get limited access to it (but not in your home) that could work. I think you would be better off though if you sold it and used the money to buy a smart phone. That way you would still have access to the Internet but might not spend as long on it as a computer as its smaller and not so enjoyable, but watch out for the addictive games, try not to download any. Although I find my most productive days are the ones when I've lost my iPhone as I then have no distractions at all. I am actually considering getting rid of it at the moment and going completely Internet free. It's still in the consideration stage at the moment haha
