I am not sure what to say and I don't even know if they are just being nice or they really mean it. I can't pickup on those cues, I know NT people say nice things to be nice and don't really mean it but what the hell is the point of saying it if you don't mean it.

Given compliments I squirm a bit. As a child I went furious.
I am still practising on how to give compliments and know when to give them, but I have learned.
Likewise I have a hard time listening to too many "highpitched" superlatives.

My mom’s really good at accepting compliments. She’ll say "Thanks. That means a lot to me", and the person gets all giddy. But when I repeat her words verbatim, it becomes an insult and I’ve somehow told the person their opinion means nothing. I always reply inappropriately. I’m just extremely uncomfortable being singled out and complimented, so maybe subconsciously I’m trying to discourage them and thereby stop any compliments from being made by that person again.

They're important to make others feel appreciated and usually I don't mind them. They've become very painful for me recently, though because I'm just so depressed that I can't believe anything good being said about me. I suppose it depends on the mood.

To make the other person happy.

To make the other person feel good.

To make the other person feel better after something upset them.

There is usually at least a kernel of fact in there. But often times people really do mean it and just want to say something nice to you. Maybe they are in a good mood and want to share the love.

That's what I tell myself when the birds wake me up in the morning-that they want to share the love. But usually I just wish they'd shut up for five more minutes.
