I started adult art class a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoy it. It's only for one afternoon a week. The students are aged between 40-50, about 16 people altogether, most of them seem OK except one woman. She is very noisy and talks all through the class which I manage to block it out.
We have a ten minute break at half time and when we went back into the room the tutor asked us to move seats to get a different view of the objects we were drawing. This woman is always late back from her break so she was out of the room when we moved seats. I moved to near where she had been sitting and had to move her things slightly to fit my drawing board on the table.
When she came back I thought I should say something so I said 'I hope you don't mind, but I've just moved your things along a bit' and smiled. She went all huffy and said 'Well I won't have to mind will I' in a sarcastic tone, and stomped off to find another seat. I didn't know what to say! I thought of saying that the tutor had told us to move but I thought it sounded a bit pathetic. What should I have said. I have a feeling that she's a bit of a bully and want to know the best approach to her would be.

I don't think there is anything you could have said. She was mad that you touched her artwork without her permission. Seems like she's just a grouch, though.

I would have said straight out that the tutor said change places. Sounds like she's one of those people always looking for an excuse to complain.

BTW, when do we get to see yer work, luv?

Well, since you asked so nicely  ...I've just posted a painting in the Art Writing and Music forum. I'll post my drawings when I get a bit better at them :)

"Oscar The Grouch" is my favorite character on Sesame Street. I would have likely been friends with that grouch in your class and kept her out of your way.

Thanks Machine1 - I liked Oscar the Grouch too, actually, talking of Sesame Street, the nasty woman in my class has a remarkable resemblance to big bird, she's very large with yellow hair

You can't really say anything with that particular situation

I was reading the history of Oscar and it turns out he was based on
a real waiter at a resturant that Jim Henson visited. The guy was so grouchy that Henson like to go back to the resturant in a masohistic
way to here the waiter complain.

If you are lucky, you may never have to talk to her again.

If you have to talk to her or refer to her in front of her, make a point of always getting her name wrong

Thanks you guys for making me laugh about it. :)

I'm OK with people unless they do or say something unexpected, then it really throws me off balance and I start worrying about how I could have handled things differently. I should just forget about it, it wasn't like it was a major insult or anything. (I could handle a major insult better, I'd just have decked her LOL) People just freak me out sometimes.

I'd much prefer to sit quietly in the corner and do my own thing, as Oscar says "Don't bang on my can! Go away".

We are generally placid, but don't forget we are fire-breathers sometimes
