Best Operating System available for every day use i.e. word processing, internet browsing, spreadsheets, basic audio/video processing, picture archiving etc., exclude gaming, that is a specialization.

Due to the various hardware abstraction issues, I live in Windows for the moment, but as soon as I have the money I'll be at least partially moving to a Xeon/Fedora desktop rig, with the likelihood of a core i7 Windows gaming machine. That said, more and more games I'm keeping watch on are becoming available for Fedora (which includes many loopholes for running Canonical & Debian SW), and I sure want to have a nice bunch of PCs and consoles behind any media center I build for me, as well as a focus on damn good audio.

By every day use, are we talking about the average Joe, or a IT professional, or what>

For the Average Joe: Windows.
For a IT Pro: Windows and Linux

Android (which has a Linux kernel, so I classify it as a Linux variant). I have an Android laptop (ASUS Transformer with keyboard), which is my main computing device when commuting or travelling, or lying in bed - or just away from my desktop.

But I use Debian Testing 99% of the time on my desktop PC at home and at work - rarely Windows, and very rarely do I use a MacOS device.

I have been trying to make a boot USB disk of Android 4.0 for x86 to put onto an old EeePC (701), but nothing seems to like booting from this old USB key. Hmmm, must buy a new one when I can.

I rarely use Windows, and tend to fume and rage at it ("How can people use this slow and demented OS!?!?!?!").

I have been running Crunch Bang Linux on my Netbook. Very minimal lean OS, but hey it's great for the basics like Web Browsing or Word Processing.

I run puppy linux from a flash drive, the os loads it self into the ram. Runs very fast because it doesn't write to a hard drive.
My computer is quite old now so it is great. You may need to learn a bit before working with it. Because it runs from a flash drive, there is no issue really with messing anything up on your computer.

That sounds really interesting. Just had a read up on its homepage:
http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20a ... tarted.htm

Think I'll download it and give it a try. :)

yeah it is great. They have files called *.pup files to install new programs, but those make the OS bigger. They also have files called *.sfs, these install new programs, but are designed to load and unload so don't add to the OS. I have GIMP.sfs, BLENDER3d.sfs and a wine.sfs file. So when I want use those programs I just load them up. you can download a dev.sfs to do development.

I love how it is so small.

I'm trying to work out which puppy to download. It isn't obvious. Apparently the long term supported version is "precise puppy" but the download page is for "Slacko puppy". Following the download link gives a list of files:

devx_slacko_5.5.sfs 2013-Mar-04 06:40:29 103.6M application/octet-stream
devx_slacko_5.5.sfs.md5.txt 2013-Mar-04 06:40:29 0.1K text/plain
puppylogo96.png 2013-Mar-04 15:41:52 17K image/png
release-Slacko-5.5.htm 2013-Mar-04 16:43:02 49.2K text/html
slacko-5.5-4G.iso 2013-Mar-04 18:24:37 164.5M application/octet-stream
slacko-5.5-4G.iso.md5.txt 2013-Mar-05 08:10:56 0.1K text/plain
slacko-5.5-PAE.iso 2013-Mar-04 19:00:30 165.3M application/octet-stream
slacko-5.5-PAE.iso.md5.txt 2013-Mar-05 08:09:43 0.1K text/plain
slacko96.png

I gather I don't want the PAE version as it is requires more than 4 GB ram and I only have 1 GB.

Presumably I just need the file I've bolded and to cut it to CD? Will the computer boot from that CD?

^^I'm using Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build)

scroll down on this page

http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20L ... elease.htm

You can also load *.deb files on it.

Try that for a start, then I might be able to help you if you have probs with it.

Not sure about the others. That is the only one I have used.

^ Thanks, I'll download it and give it a try. It will take a while to download though, I've only got dial-up.

A consequence of living in rural France unfortunately, there is no technological infrastructure outside of towns. The nearest small village is 5 miles away, the nearest town around 12 miles away. Satellite internet is too costly and of dubious reliability here too. The telephone line is ancient and hanging off the poles in places. My connection speed often isn't even 56 K; it is sometimes as low as 20 K - the sort of speed you'd expect in a third world tin shack in the middle of nowhere.

lol. Hey that's all good. I kind of like the 8O smilely for amusement.

I hope when you get near the end of the download it doesn't bollocks up or anything. Then you have to start all over again.

good luck :salut:
