lol does this mean I finally won the argument?

I'd go for Intel-based Mac, the higher the spec, the better. But why not try games on your current rig instead of splashing-out for new machine?

iMac, Mac Book Pro or Mac Pro

The most expensive iMac is the best most likely.

Kubuntu seems the best for KDE desktop. I used to rate SuSE very highly too, but now they're making deals with microsoft I don't wanna know anymore. Which desktop do you like most?
Personally I prefer KDE because it seems to be the one with most features and I don't really like look of GNOME. The other desktops (XFCE etc) are probably only worth considering if you have to compromise because of low-spec PC.

Cheaper, you don't really need a quad core Xeon system to play games. (as a matter of fact it's hard to come up with things you DO need it for)

I have to confess that there is an element of "bragging rights" behind my interest in the Mac Pro.
Think I'll wait till there are 8 core machines though. In practical terms it's difficult to justify 8 or even 4 cores now but at least you've got some degree of future-proofing. :) Quite want to experiment with Mac coding too.
