Both Aero and the Windows 8 UI look ugly to me and are certainly not the pinnacle of what can be done on a modern GPU.

The Windows 8 UI was done as some combination of a least common denominator that can run on low power devices and something that fits the flat look they're going for. However even low power devices have shader processors these days, especially selected ones that would run Windows RT or whatever out of the box, and the flat look is not what a lot of people including myself want. Frankly, in 2013 I'd like to see something that is fully ortho rendered with realtime shadows, specular, etc. It shouldn't be that hard.

Numerous studies have been conducted on this--and almost all of them show that a lot of flashy effects are just distracting. GUIs need to look good in 2013, but they also need to retain the same simplicity found in Windows 95.

Even if you choose a flashy interface that's not 3D, it will still look ugly in half a decade. Once neon lights below the car and Buffalo shoes were considered to be good looking as well.

A heavily customized Arch Linux setup with a tiling window manager (not a desktop) and a lot of other cool things :)

GUIs are overrated. For power users, the command line is usually better.

Also, the Windows 8 UI sucks unless you like your computer to look like your phone. If course, Windows sucks in general as well but that's another story :)

#!

OK, fine. Much as I wanted to leave that as my entire post... : )

  • #! (CrunchBang) Linux (Debian based) on servers and forensics VMs
  • OS X 10.9.1DP2 on daily driver MacBook Pro
  • OS X 10.9 GM on hackintosh graphics workstation
  • Debian on Rπ
  • System 7.5.5 on Mac SE/30
  • NetBSD on Quadra 700
  • Windows 7 in VM when I have to hold my users' hands

I've been trying to get myself to use Awesome or i3 but for someone used to Windows 7 or KDE it's hard to get the hang of. I think it would be more efficient though if I got used to it.

Unless your power using is in graphic design or video editing, for instance...

Just switch and you will be forced to get used to it :)

Note the use of the word "usually" in my post; I didn't say one should never use GUIs for anything :)

GUIs are overrated for server management, especially given that it's not hard to get Windows clients to connect to a Linux server via Samba. At the end of the day, you don't need to pay the price of an adequate used car for Windows Server.

Having said that, WYSIWYG interfaces are popular for a reason—and they speed up anything that's not server related. Try programming in Eclipse, LiteIDE, NetBeans or MS Visual Studio vs. programming in Vim with GCC and see for yourself. :P

I'm not speaking from ignorance here, but thanks for assuming that. I've programmed in several of the IDEs you mention as well as Emacs and Vim.

You're assuming that people use Vim with the CLI with gcc as separate programs. It's possible to use Vim as an IDE that is more efficient than your GUI IDEs due to its lack of reliance on the mouse.

I didn't say that you were ignorant or that Vim, Emacs, Nano and similar programs were useless. Unix commands have an error rate ranging from 3 to 53 percent among people with computer related jobs, though, so unless we're talking low level modules or scripting, these programs have very few advantages over conventional IDEs.

Windows 8 at home and at work. Windows XP on my old gaming machine, but it's still waiting for me to replace the mobo so I'm
not sure that counts!

Android phone (Xperia Z1)

Windows 8.0, by choice, and I love it.

Had so many issues with 8.1.
