where is all my memory going?

I have a 34 GB hard drive. 24 GB are being used. I have no idea what could be using up all this memory... I have no games on the computer, about 3 GB in music, 3 GB in pictures... I don't download movies... so how do I figure out what is consuming my memory?

Is there any sort of diagnostic test you could do? If not, I would recommend going into Windows Explorer/My Computer and doing a little investigation.

Do you have any games on your computer? Depending on the game, those can take up a lot of memory.

I don't if there is a diagnostic . I have no games on this computer.

Try running scandisk if you have windows There may be a physical problem with your hard disk. Or maybe your computer is storing huge quantities of temporal data, you can also clean those through your internet browser.

I always delete my temporary files... I don't think it's that.

If it were linux, you could

cd /
du -s --si *

and then cd into the directory that uses most space and repeat the process.

It also has an awesome graphical utility, kdirstat, (you don't really need to
run KDE to use it - I run gnome and it works too).

I use a program that is very close to kdirstat called WinDirStat and it is perfect for seeing what is taking up so much space. Its website is http://windirstat.info/

Just remember n = 1.5x where "n" is how much storage space you need and "x" how much you have.

Is there any way I can look at the directories through the command window, in order of memory usage?

Thanks run and neoplatonist, yes I use windows, I'm not brave enough for linux.

That was very cool I was able to see where everything was going. I had a lot more music than I realized, and there were some old games my kids had on here... thanks.
