Excuse me. My roleplay characters and I have to go kill them now. And the mercury theory was discredited ages ago. I highly doubt that mercury changes the way someone's brain is wired.

Under the responses someone pointed out a link to this site http://www.nomercury.org/science.htm

Could that be any more offensive to us. "Toxic insults"! I'll show you toxic insults! :Practices warmup swings with my large wooden spoon:.

*sigh* Ignorant people will be ignorant people. There always has to be something to blame...

Erm...what? There's no cure for Asperger's - there's training and learning, sure, but not medication. And it doesn't just poof away a year later.
They must have been totally clueless about the entire thing. I wish people wouldn't talk about things they obviously don't understand. It bugs the heck out of me.

(I hadn't read this when I posted the first time.)
I vote we rip this to shreds. It's completely absurd. These people have no idea what they're talking about, and there's no reason for this. *is completely frustrated*

I'm sure they aren't saying this with all cases but it has been theorized that complications with pregnancy may cause autism at times. I think there's no absolute cause in all cases but a fetus is somewhat delicate. I mean, drinking while pregnant can give facial deformities so why not having mercury while pregnany cause problems in the brain?

By 2005 there were only 2 vaccines left in the UK containing mercury, neither of which are routinely given to little children. Therefore, according to the mercury theory, children under 4 or 5 in the UK should be completely ASD free in a couple of years. We'll see ... ! Ironically, the MMR vaccine which was linked with autism by some quack, had no mercury in it at all.

As often seems the case, people jump onto some bandwagon, without any real evidence, because they HAVE to have an explanation as to why little Johnny has an ASD. For example, MMR was blamed in the UK, partly because the innoculation was given at the same time that children start showing the onset of ASDs. The link was coincidental, not causal, and this has been demonstrated by lots of peer reviewed studies in several countries (some of which had been using it for years before the UK took it up). The link with MMR was as spurious as saying that there was a comet the week little Johnny was conceived, therefore ... !

There is a lot of bad science and pseudo-science out there.

The beliefs concerning mercury have not been proven either way. The latest report poo pooing mercury as a cause was funded by the ADA who is responsible for a lot of the mercury in people's bodies.

There's no reason why mercury couldn't be a possible cause of autism since it is widely known as the cause of Mad Hatters disease. Some of you are too young to know about that.

BTW anyone had themselves tested for heavy metals? I have. Guess what I am above the legal limit in mercury & also cadmium and copper.

For those who had parents born in the 40s & 50's guess what the your dads probably played with? Mercury! My dad said boys used to paint pennies with mercury because it would turn them a shiny silvery color and then they would pop them in their mouths for some reason. Also many dishes and alarm clocks had mercury until the 60's when people started wising up. No wonder subsequent generations are brain damaged!

In the 70's we used Mercuachrome as a topical medicine on cuts. They took it off the market because it contains mercury. Little kids used to paint themselves with mercurachrome because it was fun.

It's possible, but this article is talking about shots for children, not pregnant women.

Wasn't there a country over in Europe that stopped using mercury entirely in their shots? If I remember correctly, their ASD percentage didn't go down.
