Is there no justice in the world. Why not just pass a law saying that special needs kids aren't equally protected under the law. If it was "normal" kid that had this done to them these people would be behind bars for ALOT longer. Then the lady has the nerve to say she did it for their own good, that they would try jumping out the window if she didn't (why not make that impossible, would be alot easier then caging them), that making a bedwetter sleep in a bathtub (for he says 87 days) helped him. Then they get experts to testify on their behalf! WTF!

I agreed with this quote, "...are grown adults who know the difference between right and wrong. So I ask that they get as much time in jail for as long as my siblings had to be in cages." Sadly the jury must not have...

Unfortunately, many people feel so sorry about those who care for those with those with a disability (who deserve support, not to be viewed as pathetic figures) they tend to forgot the disabled themselves. Assuming all the facts are accurate, these sentences should have been far, far tougher.

Quote:
What do you do with these kids?" Michael Gravelle asked. "I prayed constantly for the answer."

He said the enclosures resulted from the suggestions of a social workers, who recommended strict rules to improve the children's behavior.

"I'm begging you," Michael Gravelle told the judge. "I do not deserve jail."

Can it reasonably be argued that they meant this?

Quote:
Prosecutors said the Gravelles were cruel. Witnesses, including the sheriff and some of the children, said the cages were urine-stained and lacked pillows or mattresses, but a social worker and others who testified for the defense said they never witnessed abuse and that the children's behavior improved because of the bright blue and red cages.

Sickening.

There's going to be a special place in hell just for those two bastards! I wonder what the inmates will do them when they hear of these people's crimes.

Good God ! ! They had eleven of these children?? What sort of authorities do you people have that would allow a couple of obviously unstable adults to have ELEVEN children to watch over ???? AND they must have never stopped by to check up on the kids ???? As we used to say, a horse-whipping would be too good for 'em.

Social workers...what virtues contribute to their judgement? They never seem to acknowledge or suspect anything except their paperwork and due dates.
Anyway, what is with the blue and red cages? The children's behavior improved? Yeh, right...Oh boy, I get to stay in the bright blue cage...Yipeeeeee!! !

Why would anybody think they could handle this ELEVEN is a big number for even the easiest to handle no special needs type kids. These though were special needs kids do they no have any sort of limits on how many or supervise them at all. I think someone in charge of placing them should be going to jail too or at least lose there job

I 100% agree with you---HOWEVER---as someone who has been "in the system" as a foster child I know that there are too many children and too few foster parents.

Pretty much anyone who volunteers (with no priors) is allowed to care for whatever number of children they feel that they can.

If you also factor in the special needs issue---those children probably had very few options in the current system.

That is how 11 children come to be placed in the care of 2 adults. In addition, the state probably gave a small chunk of change for each child placed there. Some foster parents provide "minimum care" to make a profit off of the children in their care.

There are some people who would see disabled children as a double payday---especially if they neglected them in this fashion.

I have little doubt that these people were in it for the money. Just my two cents.

Prof... I don't know if there is any way to tell that the adults are unstable when they go to adopt the kids. But there should seriously be limits on how many kids a family can take in, especally when they have "special needs".

As anyone in the U.S. knows, the state will pay you for taking in foster children. The amount of money paid to the foster family is substantially higher when the children have special needs. This guy even boasted to his neighbor that the kids were a goldmine. So personally, I think that there should be a limit on taking in kids with special needs. Mother Teresa herself couldn't manage 11 of them.

Fortunately these "parents" will now be forced to live in a cage :)

But aren't there people who drop by to inspect the household ?? To monitor the health of the foster children???

Supposedly... They are usually overworked and have far more cases then they can possibly handle.
