I usually write with a word processor (such as Word) in Outline mode. I create a major heading entitled "Bon Mots", and then in just a random, stream of consciousness manner start entering words, phrases, sentences, or whatever may come to mind.

After a few minutes these usually grow into sentences, then paragraphs, and so on. I can then use the Outline mode features to readily group / rearrange these into something more meaningful. Even after the prose begins to form I still keep the Bon Mots section going; it is my way of keeping the words flowing and helps me avoid writer's block.

This sort of relates to what I have heard called a "snowflake" approach to writing.

I found a program called yWriter that lends itself really well to the snowflake method and other outline intensive methods. It allows you to break stuff down to the scene level and drag and drop them between chapters. It also has modules built in for other items such as characters, locations, and items. It's free. It's really helped me keep organized which was one of the problems I was having before.
