Really the 50s and 60s, but still interesting when compared with air travel today.

in the '50's intelligent young men were selected to train for jet-fighter pilot, my grandparents had to fight that decision hard to not let my dad be that, he'd become medic as a result, and finally became assistent to some american professor in bio-medicine, later i had a friend who's dad had been pilot, they had a photoalbum, a large, terribly large, number of men had a cross on them on the photo (died)

^ Hmm, if that'd been me I would've fought tooth and nail to be a fighter pilot back then, if qualified and given the chance. It's weird how some things work out. :? Actually, it's amazing to think of the safety features in aircraft today implemented as a result of earlier fatalities – even something as simple as the rounded windows in passenger aircraft.
