How can people who aren't under the influence of any drug or alcohol have the guts to go up to anyone and stab them to death? How do they feel afterwards? What's going through their minds? Why can't they spare someone's life and go and stab a rock or something, instead of a living person or animal?

I know I've always been insecure about myself and before I went on antidepressants I had a lot of anger in me, but I still did not have any intentions of murdering other people. I just couldn't do it. Well, I didn't even think about it. It's just an awful thing to do.

But it seems to be going on more and more lately. More people are going missing then found dead somewhere, looking like they had definitely been brutally stabbed. It just sickens me. And why would men want to have sex with a child? The other day I read about a man that was trying to lure a child to him, and kept on flashing his penis at her, and luckily a neighbour saw and got the little girl home safe, told her parents then called the police. Now this man has been arrested, his face is in the papers, and he has lost respect from his family and friends. Was it really worth it??? I just don't know what's wrong with some people.

And I always worried about me not being ''right'', but when I think of all these nuts out there who intend on murdering and raping innocent people, it makes me think how sane I am. I just can't get my head round these murderers and rapists. It's so depressing and scary to know that we are sharing this world with these despicable people. It's more scary when you read of things where someone has been in love with someone for so many years and it was just a normal, loving relationship, then suddenly that person turns violent for no reason at all, and starts stabbing their partner or keeping them hostage.

I know you can't wrap yourself up in cotton wool but sometimes I feel like doing this. It's such a shame to have these horrible people around.

Rant over.

I think the media is to blame for making it appear that there is more brutality in the world than ever before -- they focus more on it. Bad news sells. The truth is we live in the safest times in history. There will always be people who are capable of horrific acts of violence. But by land large, things are improving.

But... What if mental illness is the reason they murder or rape? Should they STILL be called despicable? There are persons who think Aspies / Auties are despicable because of the way WE are. Would YOU want to be shunned because you're ASD, or helped?

Honestly in most cases I do not think alcohol and drugs would make a murderer or rapist out of someone who has no desire to do such things and some drugs cause more mellowing effects that would make it more difficult to be 'violent' anyways. Some people are sadistic and find pleasure in harming living people/animals, some people have a lot of built up anger and rage, and it certainly doesn't justify it but I think that sort of thing does play a role in violent behavior....of course doesn't mean getting angry makes someone violent.

As far as I know there is no mental illness with the symptoms 'murder and rape', I mean if there is mental illness/disability present than in serious cases it does have to be taken into account but I do not think it's accurate to go as far as saying a mental illness in itself would cause someone to rape or knowingly murder someone. I mean I can see cases where maybe someone in a severe state of psychosis kills someone because in their mind they are defending them-self or something, obviously I do not think that should be treated the same as someone who knowingly kills their ex girlfriend for instance because he doesn't like the thought of her being with someone else.

As for ASD having ASD in itself is not violating other peoples rights, or taking their life...so not sure having ASD can be compared to despicable behavior.

Mental illness, schmental schmillness.

EVERYONE HERE has a mental illness (because I don't know ANY of us that "just" have autism, without depression or anxiety or OCD or PTSD or something)...

...and we manage not to kill people, rape people, and be truly horrid.

Hey-- I don't think people kill and rape because they're perfectly sane.

And yes, I DO want them to get help. I want them to feel safe enough to ask, and have access enough to get it, before impulse control and decision making and humanity break down enough for that stuff to happen.

But no amount of that stuff is going to stop it entirely, because there are people out there who would choose it anyway.

Does "mentally ill" mean you should be immune from judgment??

I'll put it this way-- They tell me most people have the thoughts. Even the urges. I don't actually know anyone who has never verbalized the urge to maim or kill. Most of us, though, manage to STOP THERE. We understand that it's anger, or frustration, or whatever-- it's The Monkey sitting in a tree flinging poo.

We let it fling poo in its tree in our heads...

...and then we keep on ENGAGING IN THE ACTIONS OF HUMANITY.

There are things in life that, especially after reaching adulthood and knowing better, we just DON'T DO! In some subcultures it is expressed as: Your Kink Is NOT OK - anyone who fails to grasp that concept and crosses that line would be doing the world far more good by feeding the worms and vultures.

some people are wired in such a way that they don't give a rats ass about other peoples feelings (worse then psychopaths, at least those know about it and try to get by, most of them).
people like that should be locked away however, if not as a punishment (typically it doesn't work on these kind of people, since they don't feel like they did something wrong), then to protect society from them.

there is nothing inherently wrong about missing all empathy, but there is no excuse for not even trying to; there are ground rules and laws you can learn to live by, even though you don't see why they are there.

as mentioned, these people always existed, but there is more media coverage nowadays...

These awful people must have some sort of conscience though, because most murders happen where there are less people around, so they must have some sense in their head telling them that they will get caught stabbing somebody where there's lots of people more so than when there is nobody around. Then they run away when the police come, so something in their head must know that it's wrong, if you get what I mean. I don't know why they don't just work out the decent answer, which is don't do it at all.

Obviously I have heard of some murder cases where somebody has been stabbed to death right in the middle of a very busy street in broad daylight, but mostly I hear of these things happening at places where there's less people.

There has been 3 murders happen this year in the same town where my boyfriend lives, and now I keep having nightmares where I'm lost there and it's dark and I miss the bus and can't get hold of my boyfriend, and there are rapists and people with knives around, sometimes following me. I often wake up with palpitations. I wish people didn't have to murder.

I'd say most of us live in the most insular times; life is quite consistently and inherently dangerous. The more accountable and protected a society is made to feel, the greater the sum total of random influences to predispose the humans towards acts of evil. Case in point, no one in the U.S. steals more money or kills more people than police, traditional criminal organizations must keep lower profiles; many have yet to collectively realize that fighting crime just boils down to more fighting.

No one who kills or rapes is healthy ~ wether they're re-living some kind of trauma, unable to control a hormonally-exacerbated prejudice, not wired to appreciate how delicate life is, or (eg) was so distressed when they found out they're going to die one day that they stopped caring, etc etc, it's all ill.
^^^^^ And while crimes committed on the spur of the moment are quite different from pre-meditated acts of violence, in both cases the mind did somehow 'lose the plot' & unravel.
Of course the prison system doesn't treat all violent criminals as if they're ill ...it was never made to put that amount of effort into rehabilitation, which is why many people leave prison with the same unhealthy attitues they took into prison, the same selfish disregard, the same fears and fake arrogance, the same prejudices.
^^^^^ The cycles of violence played out in wars and in the more subtle forms of oppression not only leave damaged souls in war zones and ghettos / minority communities etc, but (with the media poised to sweep in on every gory detail) can also leave the rest of the population a tad terrorized ~ people might not show they're distressed, but how many people are truly happy with the way things are?
So everyone who experiences the big bad world is more at risk of behaving in-humanely than they were before.
^^^^^ Our fragile minds and hearts, our easily un-balanced hormones etc are part of what it means to be human ~ considering how painful it can be to lose a loved one, and how even under ideal conditions people can accidently offend and injure, it would be really strange if no one ever behaved 'dispicably' ...it would be a cold world indeed if no one was physically / mentally able to be adversely affected by food, chemicals, the condition of their own mind, the actions of other people. ^^^^^
The trick is to understand enough about these things to stop your brain being shocked if / when you're confronted with a sensationalized (/ insensitive) news report OR (god forbid) an upsetting incident.

^^^^^ I know that might sound like a very depressing situation BUT it is possible for everyone to become more considerate ...so things can improve , alot.
Sharing knowledge (freely) instead of jumping in to control / restrict / limit people, that's what we all need more of.
