I was walking past the bosses office when he called me in, and I was 100% certain I was going to get in trouble. Getting in trouble is the one thing that will always give me anxiety like nothing else. He was on the phone when he called me in, so I was left to stew for a bit. Turns out I wasn't in trouble, he just wanted to discuss something.

My old boss at my old site had even gotten into the habit of telling me whenever he called me into the office "You're not in trouble Kerryn, I just need this, this and this." And this new boss is much better than my old boss - I shouldn't have this crippling anxiety just because I get called into his office.

:(

Sorry, I'm missing the 'stupid' part...?
Sounds pretty 'normal' (from my pov) to me. =)

it's normal to feel that way. my boss only talks to me if i've f****d up, so i usually just avoid him and i'm never comfortable talking to him.

Being a little nervous is normal. You just are a lot nervous. Maybe just having a replacement attitude will help. Something to use instead of the nervousness because you really do not know what it is about. Like assume an attentive and friendly attitude (ie. 'What's up?'). Then no matter what it is, you are starting from a good position.

I still feel stupid, especially when it then takes me half an hour to calm down while trying to pretend I'm fine.

I try to tell myself that I have no idea what the boss wants when he calls me in, but it never works.

Sometimes I think there are forms of anxiety that are just "built in". Even though I'm more confident around people, I leave perfectly normal conversations feeling shaken and sweaty sometimes. I dread having to talk to anyone in authority about anything, lest I receive terrible news that can't be overturned from my position.

On the upside, we have real reason to tell ourselves it's "just anxiety again, nothing to it."
