Suzette Haden Elgin was the author of The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. In one of her many blog articles she proposed a model for communication styles, based on what you prioritize:

Understood
Remembered
Believed
Pleasant

The idea is that you rank these based on "I prioritize this the most, then that the next most, and so on."

For me, "pleasant" isn't even something I rank. I hate that requirement so I refuse to include it in my ranking. For me, the most important goals in communication with another person are, in order: Understood, Believed, Remembered.

How is it for you?
