I once read somewhere that Mississippi is the poorest state in the US! BTW, parts of Detroit are having a record high in foreclosures! You should snag one if you can!

I read that, too.

Wouldn't have any heating costs and you would need fewer clothes :?

But rent is $1000 a month there. Many people have to work two jobs to make ends meet due to the cost of living being so high.

As far as the big cities in Texas go, the cheapest is El Paso. I think Austin might be the most expensive due to everybody moving there. But none of the cities are too terribly pricey.

Arkansas and our eternal arch-rival, Oklahoma, are both cheap as well.

do parts of NYC still have rent controls?

How do you reconcile that with a free market?

New Mexico. I have lived in many places and that is what comes to mind. Los Cruses rarely gets very cold, is never humid because its a desert and everyone there is poor, so its all cheap. Also, they like vocano rocks for lawns there. You don't have to water or mow it and grass won't stay alive anyway. Sunrises and sunsets are very beautiful. Just be sure you have an air conditioner in your car and home.

swamp coolers should work pretty good if the area is dry enough. Cheaper than AC.

I live in Maine...the cost of living is very low here, and it's not over-populated (Less than a million people in the entire state)

Plus...no tornadoes, no hurricanes, no major floods or wildfires...

But...you have to like winter :D

New Mexico was my favorite.

It all depends if you can bring your living with you. I market on the web, so I can be anywhere.

Snow country gets expensive, heating and such. Snowed in for weeks at a time. Farther south in the low lands warm winters, and hot but so dry I do not feel it. 115 in the desert is like 90 in New Orleans.

Dead little towns get real cheap, but then there are the people who live there, and a fifty mile drive for groceries. Santa Fe has culture, but costs.

Texas between Del Rio and San Antonio, both Amtrak stations. West of Del Rio is a lot of volcanic rock to El Paso. Good water is the main issue through the warm and dry lands.

Worldwide Murry Bridge Australia is the best place to live. But few are so lucky.

Oregon is no longer cheap. Land here has gotten ridiculously expensive. GREED is running rampant and if you search rmls.com, the multiple listing service for NW Oregon / SW Washington, you will see lots of dumps on .11 acres (tiny city lot) for over $500,000. It has gone insane here. Of course with these crazy prices the homes aren't selling, so inventory is piling up, but everybody is hoping for some dumb rich Californian to snatch up their house at an inflated exorbitant price.
