Mom said that when I was two, she and Dad and I were in a fishing boat. I fell overboard. Only my foot remained visible above the water. Dad grabbed that foot and saved me. After that, I would scream when Mom tried to rinse my hair.
In grade school during summer, I took swimming lessons. In my second year, the instructors wanted us to swim across the deep end. I told everyone, one at a time, in my class about the fishing boat incident and managed to go to the back of the line three times before someone tattled. An instructor forced me to jump in. I swam across the pool with no problem.
I went on to become a competitive swimmer and a life guard. I learned first hand of the value of facing one’s fears.
