I find that in order to persevere for a long time on something, I get very intense and obsessively focused on it. I find that if I am not very intense and obsessively focused on it, then I will not persevere. It's like I cannot modulate how I approach a major task.

I'm similar except that I get bad burn out as well. My solution is to keep a series of large projects at the same time and switch among them when I get burnt out of one.
