Any thoughts on the recent elections or general situation in Timor-Leste (for those that are interested)? Below are some recent articles that I personally found informative:

Realistically, The situation in East Timor is better now then is was under horribly oppressive and eventually genocidal Indonesian rule.

Very true, but independence has created so many new challenges. Plus the lingering, perhaps permanent, effects of years of some of the worst violence any people have suffered through in recent memory. I really wonder what the future will bring.

You make a relevant point. I would not want East Timor to degenerate so quickly after achieving independence. Also, the nation is little known about even today after extremely brutal violence not long ago. I would not want to see it ignored.

East Timor'd be better known here in Australia. After all, we sent a few troops over there....

Well, we can thank Shakira for mentioning them in her song "Hips Don't Lie"
(Sorry if that was inappropriate)

No, it isn't inappropriate. I was actually unaware of the song - not surprising seeing I am mostly ignorant of pop culture.

Celebrities do have a tendency to muddle things. Issues such as the environment, land mines, animal rights, etc. often bring to mind the celebrities that champion these causes and not issues directly related to the causes themselves.
